Description
Summary:OR FW .4T22 :83-2-05 50 Includes bibliographical references (p. 8).; Includes maps.; Series: Technical report (Oregon. Nongame Wildlife Program), 83-2-05. "Ground surveys were conducted at 12 sites in southwestern Oregon previously identified from aerial surveys as potential peregrine falcon breeding habitat. Raptor activity, cliff characteristics and potential for nest site enhancement were noted to identify existing peregrine nesting areas, and to aid in any future reintroduction efforts. Eleven of the 12 sites were accessible and were fully evaluated from the ground. One site was classified as "excellent," one was considered "suitable," three were "marginal," four were "submarginal," and two sites were "unsuitable" as peregrine nesting habitat. Evaluations were based on a combination of cliff height, cliff extent, airspace and vista. Open airspace and extent of cliff face were the factors most limiting suitable peregrine nesting habitat in southwestern Oregon. Cliff height was also lower than preferred. However, the prey base was considered adequate and suitable nesting substrates were available at most cliff sites evaluated. No peregrine nests were located; one male was noted in the area and white wash was observed on cliff ledges at three sites. Site evaluation summaries are included with suggestions for nest site enhancement and further monitoring" P. 1.
