Summary:Work is believed to be an important factor in an individuals life and is it a way to make life decent. But losing control over one´s work due to emotional factors can affect one´s mental health. This seems to be some of the contributing factors when it comes to the development of burnout. Burnout is the result of a chronic workplace stress, and burnout is merely related to the work environment according to recent definition. The BAT-scale is the newest burnout measurement tool. The BAT-scale is a multi-dimensional instrument which assumes that burnout is a syndrome. The aim of this study is to examine if stress factors in the work environment among health and social care workers can lead to possible burnout complaints. This study gathered data from individuals on the labor market in Iceland. Participants were 257, 192 females (75%), and 65 males (25%). The study showed that Stress factors did have an impact on the development of burnout complaints. And the results showed a significant difference between development of burnout and stress factors. Also, further examination showed that individuals in risk for development of burnout experienced on average more stress factors than participants not in risk for development of burnout. En það að missa stjórn á aðstæðum í vinnunni sem og ákveðnir tilfinningalegir þættir einstaklings geta haft áhrif á andlega heilsu. BAT-listinn er listi sem skimar fyrir hættu á kulnun og hann metur einkenni kulnunar út frá fræðilegu líkani. BAT-listinn gerir ráð fyrir því að kulnun sé heilkenni. Helstu markmið þessarar rannsóknar er að athuga hvort að álagsþættir í vinnuumhverfi hjá einstaklingum í heilbrigðis- og félagsþjónustu geta leitt til kulnunar.
