Description
Summary:The rapid decline in Earth‘s biodiversity has led to a pressing need for effective conservation strategies. The global community, convened by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has set an ambitious goal to protect 30% of the planet‘s terrestrial and marine areas by 2030 as area-based conservation is considered to be the most comprehensive instrument for halting biodiversity loss. Despite the expansion of protected areas globally, biodiversity loss continues at an unprecedented rate, indicating the need for increased conservation efforts. „Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures“ (OECM) has been proposed by the CBD as an alternative conservation strategy to complement and expand the protected area estate. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) consequently developed official criteria to facilitate the identification and recognition of OECM candidates. This study focuses on understanding the concept of OECMs as outlined by the CBD and the IUCN and what promise OECM might have in the context of Iceland‘s area-based conservation landscape advance conservation of nature. Using qualitative governance system analysis, eleven designated area types were analyzed against the OECM criteria in order to test their promise as OECM candidates. The study found that there is considerable potential for OECMs in Iceland which could both strengthen the existing protected area estate and advance the imperative of meeting global biodiversity conservation targets. Hröð hnignun líffræðilegrar fjölbreytni í heiminum hefur leitt það í ljós að brýn þörf er á umfangsmiklum verndaraðgerðum. Talið er að staðbundin náttúruvernd sé öflugasta leiðin til að spyrna gegn hnignun líffræðilegrar fjölbreytni. Því hafa þjóðir heims, undir handleiðslu Samnings Sameinuðu þjóðanna um líffræðilega fjölbreytni (CBD), nýlega sett sér metnaðarfullt markmið um að vernda 30% af af öllu land- og hafsvæði jarðar fyrir árið 2030. En þrátt fyrir aukningu náttúruverndarsvæða á heimsvísu heldur hnignun ...
