Description
Summary:Home exams, online teaching, and limited social networking are all factors associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected both Iceland and the rest of the world from early 2020. Students at the University of Iceland felt the intense reverberations stemming from the pandemic where their lives were impacted significantly. This research examines the academic outcomes of nearly 18,000 bachelor's students from all departments at the University of Iceland, spanning nine semesters before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study is twofold: to investigate the impact of COVID-19 and take-home exams on university outcomes and to explore the role of social networks in students' grades. Using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression models, our findings indicate that the pandemic significantly affected grades in both on-site and take-home exams. Furthermore, having a large social network was positively correlated with higher grades, especially during pandemic-affected semesters. However, the beneficial effect of social networks did not extend to results seen in take-home exams. These results provide insight into how students' outcomes were affected during the pandemic and, furthermore, highlight the importance of students' social networks for academic performance. Í byrjun árs 2020 skall á heimsfaraldur af völdum kórónuveirunnar COVID-19. Veiran lék Háskóla Íslands grátt, líkt og flesta háskóla heimsins, og þar þurfti að skella í lás á örskotsstundu. Kennarar þurftu að breyta kennsluáætlunum sínum yfir í rafræna kennslu og nemendur neyddust til að læra að heiman ætluðu þeir sér að halda áfram í námi. Rafrænum kennsluháttum fylgdu einnig þær breytingar að flest lokapróf voru haldin sem heimapróf og félagslíf var verulega takmarkað. Faraldurinn hafði því djúpstæð áhrif á líf þúsunda nemenda við Háskóla Íslands. Þessi rannsókn fjallar um námsárangur nærri 18 þúsund grunnnema við Háskóla Íslands yfir níu missera tímabil, frá 2018 til 2022, og spannar þær annir sem Íslendingar bjuggu við ...
