Description
Summary:The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of the Syrian students and their respective parents at the compulsory school level in Akureyri, Iceland, as well as the experiences of their teachers when dealing with them. Three Syrian families, constituting of three fathers, three mothers and six children, in addition to five teachers participated in this research. Semi-structured interviews were used to gather data, and thematic analysis was followed as a data analysis method. The findings revealed that there is a clash in cultural values regarding the process of education and a gap in home-school communication, which resulted in the parents’ lack of trust towards the Icelandic schools. Furthermore, teachers lacked the appropriate support and training to deal with this specific group of students. In spite of that, students expressed their contentment with the education system, and had good relationship with their teachers.
