Áhrif berghrunsflóðsurðarinnar frá 2007 á hraðasvið Morsárjökuls

Description
Summary:Árið 2007 féll stórt berghrunsflóð á Morsárjökul í Öræfum. In 2007 a large rock avalanche fell on the Morsárjökull glacier in Öræfi. Morsárjökull is an outlet glacier from the southern part of the Vatnajökull ice cap in Iceland. The rock avalanche fell on the upper part of the glacier and travelled on the surface. Once it stopped it was about 6-7 m thick and covered around 20% of the area of the glacier. The ice under the debris melts slower than the ice around it, so an ice step has formed under it. In the year of 2011 the ice step was rising 44 m above the glacier surface at the front edge of the debris. The goal of this project was to investigate the effects of the debris on the velocity of the ice within Morsárjökull. Two dimensional model with different geometries representing the changes from 2007-2011, was made. The program Elmer/Ice was used to compute the velocity fields, by solving the Stokes equations. The main conclusions were that as the ice step got thicker the velocity of the ice flow increased and according to the results the ice flows down from under the ice step and up to the surface in front of the ice step.
