Atmospheric conditions during two weather related aircraft incidents in Iceland and elements of the climatology of windstorms

Weather conditions are explored during two flight incidents in Iceland using conventional meteorological data, recordings from the aircrafts and a high resolution numerical model. Although the model simulations show severe conditions the weather extremes are underestimated compared to the observations. There are indications that horizontal resolution beyond one kilometer may be useful in this context. A large data set from automatic weather stations has been explored and indicates that most extreme winds occur in downslope flow and not winds from the sea. Observations also show diurnal variability in the frequency of windstorms with the maximum occurring during the night. Master Thesis Iceland Skemman (Iceland)
