Summary:This paper explores ways for the proposed LNG industry to build successfulengagement procedures with BC First Nations. The process starts with the LNG industry’s Corporate Social Responsibility with regards to developing and maintaining a Social License to Operate. This paper provides an overview of the sociopolitical landscape in British Columbia, with a brief examination of Section 35 jurisprudence; fulfilling the requirements of Consultation & Accommodation when dealing with First Nations’ rights. As well, to enhance the LNG proponents engagement strategies there is a review of the current governance models that are available to First Nations. Finally, this paper shows how the consensus approach to resolving multi-stakeholder issues can lead to the development of lasting relationships between the proposed LNG industry and the First Nations in BC.
