Description
Summary:Transcribed from photograph: "Gold Rush. 1898. Scene at the dock during Alaska gold rush." Originally known as the Parthia, the S.S. Victoria was purchased by the North American Mail Steamship Company in 1898 and used as a troopship during the Spanish-American War. In 1900, the Victoria returned to service in the Puget Sound and ran routes between Seattle and Nome. The ship was purchased by the Alaska Steamship Company in 1908. An advertisement in the May 10, 1900 Seattle Times announces the Victoria will sail for Nome "on or about May 31." A June 8 Seattle Post Intelligencer article notes that the Victoria sailed on June 7, with 640 passengers. Given that these are the first newspaper accounts found of the Victoria sailing to Nome, this photograph is believed to show the June 1900 sailing date.
