Description
Summary:Online version of original print edition of the Special Publication of the J.L.B. Smith Institute of Ichthyology; No. 43 In his revision of the genus Bathylagus, Norman (1930) recognized five species from the Southern Ocean. The taxonomic status of these species is re-evaluated by using morphometric data and the number of vertebrae, anal fin rays, gill-rakers, lateral scale series and pyloric caeca. Principle component analysis was carried out in support of species separation, using selected body proportions. Three species, namely B. antarcticus, B. gracilis and B. tenuis, are recognized here. B. gracilis and B. euryops latifrons, both described by Lonnberg, 1905, were found to be synonymous. A key to the species of Bathylagus in the Southern Ocean is provided.
