The theme of this master’s thesis is children's language use and language development. The main question is how children use the dual number, and how the children's use of language can bring them language awareness to the strengthening of language. The research is from a pedagogical perspective, and the theoretical basis is the children's language acquisition, language development, the influence of didactic communication, and the use of dual number in the North Saami language. The material is texts from pupils. For this research, there are eight pupils between the third and sixth grades. These participants have Saami as the first language at school. In Saami language dual number is used in personal pronouns, finite verbs, and possessive suffixes. Seven out of the eight informants in the study use dual number well, in personal pronouns and verbs. The material shows that in the pupils' language there are both normative forms, another grammatical number is used instead of the dual, mixture of persons and analogous forms, as the present tense inflectional suffix is also used past tense. The deviations are the most often when the plural number is used instead of the dual number, when referring to two persons. The results of this study can be useful for conversations that focus on the form of the language. It is a good pedagogical principle to take as a starting point what is known to the pupils. The children's early language awareness is of great importance for beginning reading and writing learning, but also for later reading and writing skills. publishedVersion
