Dans l'Altaï, les seuls ǐlots connus de pergélisol sont des buttes cryogènes vieilles de 2000 à 2500 ans. Elles indiquent que, sous des conditions favorables, un pergélisol peut exister à des altitudes de 1000m inférieures aux limites connues aujourd'hui.
