Summary:First Nations owners of the lands where QUT now stands. We pay respect to their Elders, lores, customs and creation spirits. We recognise that these lands have always been places of teaching, wisdom and learning. QUT acknowledges the important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people play within the QUT community. Hold Sway is the 2020 QUT Visual Arts Graduate Exhibition. On behalf of the teaching staff in Visual Arts I would like to congratulate the 2020 Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) graduates for Hold Sway. This year, these graduating students have shown a wonderful sense of support for each other as a cohort - offering encouragement and generous ideas for future directions, responding to each other’s work with frank and robust discussion. They have been active and diligent in their creative pursuits and built a collaborative and communal atmosphere in the studios, and also when working from homes spread across Queensland, interstate and internationally. These art practices address the challenges facing us today - climate activism, our relationship to nature and each other, animal rights and protection, gender fluidity, cultural diversity, mental health, spirituality, and embodied experience - the fabric of how we engage in our everyday lives and the connections we continually remake in the societal, ecological and creative environments we now inhabit. Many of these artists have already begun their professional journey - creating public artworks, collaborating, self-organising and staging exhibitions - and exploring the possibilities of digital exhibitions and art experiences such as this year’s re-imagined Graduate Exhibition. They are versatile and adept at engaging spaces for conversation and critical debate - questioning the role of art, our place in the world and the future for social, gender and climate justice.
