Summary:This chapter introduces the principles of coring, including the objectives for taking a good core and the major factors that should be considered to ensure the collection of non disturbed, representative core samples. The chapter also provides an overview of the design, function, and operation of the main types of coring equipment that can be used to sample sediments from a variety of settings including lakes, the ocean, peat bogs, soils, and permafrost.
