| Summary: | The Maine Legislature enacted the Maine Endangered Species Act in 1975, and in 1981 added the first species to the endangered list. The list was increased to 27 species after a scientific review in 1984, and a 1994 review proposed 32 more species. The Maine Legislature in 1995 took away the authority of the commissioner of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to make listings, and last year eliminated a provision in the Maine law that called for federally listed species to automatically appear on the state's list. A proposal to list the Atlantic salmon on the federal list has met with resistance in Maine, but has resulted in Project Share, an joint effort of the state and business to protect salmon habitat.
