| Summary: | Two hundred years ago, more than 500,000 salmon returned from the sea to rivers in New England, while last year fewer than 3,000 returned to just 16 rivers, with half of those returning to the Penobscot. The drastic decline in the salmon population has occurred despite a 50-year effort at restoration costing more than $100 million. This has prompted Restore: The North Woods and the Biodiversity Foundation to petition the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to list the Atlantic salmon as an endangered species.
