| Summary: | Sea-run fish, or diadromous fish, can live in both fresh and salt water. The catadromous American eel, the Atlantic salmon, the Atlantic sturgeon, smelt, shad, and river herring (commonly known as the alewife) are all sea-run fish that play a large role in the health of Maine's ecosystems, but their populations are threatened by thousands of river blockages like dams and culverts. Efforts are being made to restore river passage -- from Passamaquoddy activists working to restore access on the St. Croix, and people like Bailey Bowden, with the support of Ciona Ulbrich of Maine Coast Heritage Trust, among other, trying to restore the alewife run in the Bagaduce watershed.
