Description
Summary:Wayne Newell, Passamaquoddy elder and director of bilingual education at the Indian Township Elementary School, is an accomplished scholar who chose to devote himself to preserving the Passamaquoddy language, which he does by integrating the language into every classroom at the school. Last year, his life's work was validated with the publication of a Passamaquoddy-Maliseet dictionary by the University of Maine Press. He hopes grounding in their tribal culture will also help the children resist drugs and be better prepared for the future.
