Description
Summary:Wild sea-run Atlantic salmon populations have been in decline since the Industrial Revolution, and Maine is the only state where the species precariously hangs on. Maine has two federal salmon hatcheries, but although millions of young salmon are released, last year only 1,528 adult salmon were counted returning to Maine rivers. The nonprofit Downeast Salmon Federation has adopted Peter Gray's methods in the hatchery it has established on the East Machias River. The article describes Gray's methods and how it produces salmon that are better suited for life in the wild. The East Machias hatchery has seen encouraging results.
