Summary:Pelagic food webs are the central driver of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling in the ocean, of which particulate organic matter (POM) is a key component. However, determining the source and fate of fixed C and N in marine food webs usually requires a suite of techniques such as the elemental and isotopic composition of POM, or flow cytometry and microscopic analyses of the planktonic community, or even better, a combination thereof (Fawcett et al., 2011; Painter et al., 2014).
