Description
Summary:Abstract. — During the autumn 1980 a subglacial river was discovered traced upstream and mapped under the "Loven Est" (Spitsbergen). In the absence of knowledge of the water's origin it was possible in spring 1981 to understand the role of the subglacial run-off in the formation of the ice sheet in front of the glacier. The detailed observation of this distinctive locale has made possible the understanding of its formation and évolution. Lastly this article surveys the studies of other ice sheets and permanent flows known in Spitsbergen.
