Bulk properties composition of sediment core PS97/085-3 from POLARSTERN cruise PS97 (ANT-XXXI/3) in the Drake Passage

Free-dried and milled bulk samples from core PS97/085-3 were taken at 10-cm intervals for determination of sediment water content, densities, organic carbon, carbonate, and biogenic opal. Micromeritics AccuPyc 1,330 gas-pycnometers was used to measure the density of the dried sediment samples (ρd)....

Description
Summary:Free-dried and milled bulk samples from core PS97/085-3 were taken at 10-cm intervals for determination of sediment water content, densities, organic carbon, carbonate, and biogenic opal. Micromeritics AccuPyc 1,330 gas-pycnometers was used to measure the density of the dried sediment samples (ρd). Wet bulk density (WBD), porosity (φ, vol%), grain density (GD), and dry bulk density (DBD) were calculated following by Wang et al., (2021; doi:10.3389/feart.2021.712415). Total organic carbon (TOC) contents were determined by a carbonsulfur determinator (CS-2000, ELTRA) after the removal of inorganic carbon (TIC, carbonates) by adding hydrochloric acid. The TC and TOC contents were used to calculate the CaCO3 content by [CaCO3 = (TC-TOC)* 8.333]. Biogenic opal (BSi•10H2O) was analyzed by the sequential leaching method (Müller and Schneider, 1993; doi:10.1016/0967-0637(93)90140-X). Percentages of siliciclastic material were estimated as: [Siliciclastic (wt.%) = 100 wt.% − (CaCO3 wt.% + 2 × TOC wt. % + biogenic opal wt.%)]. All data were corrected for pore water salt content (Kuhn, 2013; doi:10.1180/minmag.2013.077.5.11). Core PS97/085-3 primarily consists of terrigenous material (mean 90.5% [weight %], min. 62.3%, max. 98.5%) and biogenic carbonate, mainly foraminifera shells in the coarse sand fraction (Wu et al., 2021; doi:10.1038/s41467-021-24264-9).
