The second definition we feel harmonizes real meaning given 11' in the aoriptures, viz,, ". A real diseiple Of Christ. A ! where!. in ist who is eharacterized by real piety. There are so no I seems, are el illed to monopolize ne Christian and use it as a elmrelt They cowhide lweause the dise called Christians at AntiOela the chart't auught to la called Christian elturela but not so in the Scriptures. In Bible times the church as a whole was not valhal Christian church ( by the Christians themselves nor by the believers) in contra- distinction to other re-ligions bodies, but was given rather as an individual name, the same as saints. Ac - cording to tradition and history the name Christian was first given to the disciples eoutemptuoualy by their persecutors; they were pointed out as Christians with scorn and derision. That, no doubt, is the reason why Peter says, ' If any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed. The first quotation given does not say that they called themselves Christians, but that they were called Christians first in Antioch, and even though the disciples ac knowledged. the name Christians afterward, there is no intimation that they received it as a church name. However we do find the apostles adhering to the name Church of God, and yet not entirely, for in Rom. 16 16, the apostle Paul says, The church-es of Christ salute you. Again, the church is called " the church of the first- born." Ileb. 12: 23. Many other names are given figuratively, such as: " the house of God," " body of Christ," " holy temple," " spir-itual house," etc. - If a few of God's peo-ple should receive and adhere to any one of these names exclusively in order to dis-tinguish themselves from the rest of God's people ( or other denominations) they would only become a sect. That would di-vide them from the entire body, the church. The Ronian Catholics have monopolized the Word. Catholic, which means universal, thus nintetenndd the Roman church ( or sect) to be universally aelatowledged. The church of Rome in adopting Roman Catho-lic as a name, became a sect, even if they had been true disciples up to that time. There is but one true exclusive or universal church, and that is " the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth." But to return to our subject again. What does it mean to be a Christian? If we ap-ply the second definition given to the peo-ple who are generally called Christians, and measure their lives by it, we fear the most of them fall far short in the meaure-ment. A Christian is a real disciple of Christ. A believer in Christ, who is char-acterized by real piety. Some one, perhaps, might ask, What is a disciple? " A disciple is one who receives or professes to receive instructions from another." Hence, a real disciple of Christ is a person who is actually receiving instructions or teaching from Christ. We do not often hear the word disciple applied to Christians now, and perhaps sonic have almost lost sight of the fact that we have the privilege of being disciples of Christ at the present time since Jesus has gone to heaven. But if we believe the Scriptures and are willing to receive what they teach, we see very clearly that we have the privile ge of being diaeiples of Christ even now. Paul writes to the ( glutei' at Ephesus like this, " But ye have not so learned Christ; if so be that 1 ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus." Eph. 4: 20, 21. Notice, he writes as if they them-selves had heard him ( Jesus), and had been taught by him, although they had not been converted until after Jesus had gone to heaven, and was at the right hand of God. We gather from what the apostle here says, that all in every place who are saved and become the children of God, hear Jesus and have been taught by him, because this church would not have privileges above any other in this respect. In prophecy we have this promise to the church : " And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children." Isa. 54: 13. This does not mean simply to be taught the knowledge of the Lord, but taught by the Lord, the Lord himself being our teacher. See also John t3: 45; Mat. 18: 20. So we see that even now we may have the blessed privilege of sitting at Jesus' feet as did Mary of old, and learning of him; thus be-ing his disciples. Praise the Lord! We do not need to join the so- called Christian church in order to become disciples of Christ; in fact, that would only unfit us for real discipleship in him. But we find that a true disciple is more than a mere learner, or one who is only receiving in-struction. It implies an adherent and fol-lower as well. One who is united to Christ and follows him. -" Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness." What Must 1 Do to be Saved? BY LOTTIE TECEOBALD. AFTER conviction repentance is the first step toward the kingdom of God. Re-pentance is a godly sorrow for having sin-ned against God. It is a broken and a con-trite spirit, and it is written that such God will save. Psa. 34: 18. Jesus and the apoa. ties preached repentance. Mark 1: 15; Acts 3: 19. God also commands those who are lost in sin, " Repent, and turn your-selves from all your transgressions; so in-iquity shall not be your ruin, . for why will ye die. For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God : wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye." Ezek. 18: 30- 32. The sinner must also confess all his sins to God like the prodigal son who had wan-dered far away from his father's house. When awakened to his condition he said, will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, and am no more worthy to be called thy son : make me as one of thy hired servants." Luke 15: 18, 19. This is the humble and contrite spirit, which God will not despise, but says : " He that cometh unto me I will in no wise cast out," and " if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteous-ness." 1 John 1: 9. For there is joy among the angels in heaven over one sinner that repents. Luke 15 7. But " he that cover-eth his sins shall not prosper: but whose confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." Prov 28: 13. There must also be a forsaldng of sin-ful ways. As it is written: " Let the wick-ed forsake his way. and the unrighteous man his thoughts : and let him return unto the Lord. and he will have mercy upon him and unto our God, for he will abun-dantly pardon." Isa. 55: 7. Jesus said, " No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate one. and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye can not serve God and mam-mon." Mat. 6: 24. " Know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity against God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God." Jas. 4: 4. The Psalmist also said, " If I regard in-iquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me." Psa. 66: 18. " But if the wicked will turn from his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be men-tioned unto him." Ezek. 18: 21. Jesus also said. If a man forsake not all that he bath ( e., house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or children, or lands, he can not be my disciple. It will cost you worldly ambitions, and your good reputation, and even those of your own household may become your worst enemies. Still Jesus requires it of you to be his disciple, and he has promised to repay us a hundred fold in this world, and in the world to come eternal life. We find the record of a rich young ruler who came to Jesus. He had lived up to all the light he had until the kingdom of God was set up. He sought to press into it, but when he found that it would cost him his possessions he went away sorrowful. Then Peter said, " Lo, we have left all and fol-lowed thee." Luke 18: 28. God not only requires a separation from sin, but also a separation from institutions which yoke saints and sinners together. This includes all man- made churches ( so-called), also secret societies, holiness un-ions, alliances, etc. for God commands, " Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteoasness? Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, . and touch not the un-clean thing and I will receive you." 2 Cor. 6: 17. " And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my peo-ple. that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues." Rev. 18: 4. There must also be a restoring of any-thing which has been taken wrongfully. Zacchmus made an acceptable restoration when he said unto the Lord, " Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken anything from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to his house." Luke 19: 8, 9. If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniqui-ty he shall surely live, he shall not die." Ezek. 33 : 15. Those who come to the Lord for pardon must lay aside all grudges and hard feel-ings against their neighbor. " For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heaven-ly Father will also forgive you; but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses." Mat. 6 : 14,15. " Whosoever hateth his broth-er is a murderer." 1 John 3: 15. And all murderers shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone. Rev. 21: 8. " Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift." Mat. 5: 23, 24. When the conditions for salvation are met Jesus is ready to save, and his Word declares, " He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself." 1 John 5: 10. " But without faith it is im-possible to please him - for he that cometh unto God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." Heb. 11 The House of the Lord. BY ROBT. ROTHMAN. ' THE Lord said to Moses, " And let them I make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them." Ex. 25: 8. God once abode in a building made by hands, but now lives in a temple made up of " living stones," or persons with spiritual life in them. " For ye are the temple of the living God; as God bath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. . And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty." 2 Cor. 6: 16, 18. Some of these simple truths of the New Testament are more beautiful and inspir-ing than anything the mind of man could invent. When we stop to consider that the great One who made the earth, the sun, moon, and stars, and upon whose bounty every living creature is dependent for life and everything it enjoys, is willing to enter the hearts of men and there live and move, we are filled with amazement and praise. God within us, is the treasure of great val-ue of which Jesus spoke. He said that when one • found it he would sell all that he had and purchase it. Surely the one May 1 2 TAT, GOSPEL TRUMRET, who backslides at the least severe trial, rates this treasure at a very low value. Those living in sin are almost unaware that there is such a treasure in the earth.; for they can nieSIesit byifeit iaiiinratMsion. Bripphwe are spiritual our, eyes.: areopened. But G- od hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit search-eth all things, yea, the deep things of God." Ver. 10. Do you discern the house of the Lord, or the body of Christ, dear reader? Methinks if you do, all the man- made " churches" are poor affairs in comparison with it. A fatal mistake is made in looking upon the glorious church of God as but one of the many " churches" in the world. Let us look upon it now as God sees it. " Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. God is known in her palace for a refuge." Psa. 48 : 2. This was spoken of ancient Jerusalem, which was a type or shadow of the new Jerusalem, or church of God. It says that God is known in her palaces as a refuge. There are many palaces in the church of God. A palace is generally the residence of a king. The kings of the New Testa-ment Jerusalem are those who have power over and do not live in sin, because of the saving power of Christ in their lives. John the Revelator wrote : " Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father." Rev. 1 : 5, 6. Thus it is written, and a host of happy saints are ready to witness that their ex-perience corresponds with the written Word. " As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it forever." ` Psa. 48: 8. In ancient times, the Jews made long journeys to Jerusalem to see their beloved city. Now, we need but to open our Bibles and read, and the Holy Spirit reveals the new Jerusalem in all its splendor and beauty. It is well for us to meditate much upon the things of God. " Walk about Zion, and go round about her: tell the towers thereof. Mark ye well her bul-warks, consider her palaces; that ye may tell it to the generation following. For this God is our God forever and ever : he will be our guide even unto death." Ver. 12- 14. Praise his name ! " We have thought of thy loving- kindness, 0 God, in the midst of thy temple.'.' Dear ones, do you appreciate your resi-dence in the city of God as you should? and are you striving to be a worthy citizen? Can you say with David, " I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord?" Psa. 122: 1. God wants the . fame of his beautiful city to spread over all the earth; are you doing what you can to this end? " Pray for the peace of Jeru-salem: they shall prosper that love thee. Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces." Ver. 6, 7. Can you say with Paul, " Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sake, - that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory" ? " For my brethren and companions' sake I. will now say, Peace be within thee. Because of [ because it is] the house of the Lord our God, . I will seek thy good." Psa. 122: 8, 9. Where is the house of the Lord ? Not especially in Illinois, nor in Maine, but wherever there are children of God in whom he can live and move. " Jerusalem is builded a city that is compact together." Psa. 122: 3. The Zion that " Elijah" Dowie is making on the shores of Lake Michigan is , built of brick and mortar; but the Zion of God is made of altogether different ma-terial. Paul wrote to the Ephesians: " Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the a-postles and prophets, Jesus Christ him-self being the chief corner stone; in whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple inthe Lord : in whom ye. also are builded together for a habitation of God through the Spirit." Eph. 2: 19- 22. One special work of the Spirit of God is ao gather his people from the sects or "' churches" of men and to make them to see that he wants them to stay in the church he has built for their habitation. Jesus Christ prayed that his people might all be one ( John 17) the unbelieving world re-fers to this prayer and then points to the numerous sects in existence under the name of: Chriettianity. This brings reproach upon the name of Christ God says, " But I had pity for, mine holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the heathen, whither they went Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God; I do not this for your sakes, 0 house of Israel, but for mine holy name's sake, which ye have profaned among the heathen, whither ye went. And I will sanctify my great name, which vas profaned among the hea-then, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, saith the Lord God, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes. For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all coun-tries, and will bring you into your own land." Ezek. 36 : 21- 24. Instead of fighting and opposing each other, God Wants his people to fight the power of Satan with all their strength, stand true to his Word, walk according to the Bible and live in peace among them-selves in his house. " Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity I It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his gar-ments; as the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life forever more." Psa. 133. One here, one there, is found that heeds the voice, And makes of God their solemn, settled choice; And lo, the King of glory enters in- The strong and mighty victor over sin Makes his abode in frail, human clay, And in it lives and moves from day to day. O gift unspeakable, 0 gift sublime, That God should be our portion all the time! Bow down, ye honored mortal, lowly bend, And let sincerest praise to him ascend! Will you be one, dear reader, that shall make a success of life and enter into the pure and blessed home of God after this life is over ? Or will you let selfishness or the devil choose for you, and neglect sal-vation, and gain an eternity of misery and despair? Choose ye this day to serve the God who. made you and is seeking only your best interests. Study how to live in his house in a manner acceptable to him and glorifying to his name. " Resist the devil," and set your face straight heaven-ward. You can succeed in living for God if you will. Learn to love him more each day; delight yourself in him and his Word, pray always in the Spirit. Never forget that, however things may seem, God loves and cares for you. " Like as a Father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him." The Everlasting Kingdom and Church of Jesus Christ. BY EMANUEL MYERS. THE uniform voice of the Bible posi-tively teaches and proves the kingdom of God and church of God to be one and the same. Therefore every scripture that proves that the Lord Jesus Christ built and established his church at the beginning of the gospel age, none the less proves also at the same time the establishment of his glorious kingdom in the hearts of the chil-dren of men. The very experience that makes us subjects of the kingdom of God, also makes us members of his church. In fact we can not be in one and not be in the other. We will now proceed to show the time of their establishment, mode of induction or entrance, and the experience to be ob-tained on receiving membership or becom-ing subjects. The Old Testament pro-phets with one accord pointed to the first advent of Christ as the time when the king-dom of God would be established. All the prophecies which relate to its establish-ment reached their fulfilment at that time. In the 2nd chapter of Daniel we read of Nebuchadnezzar's dream. In the dream he saw a great image. The head was of fine gold, his breast and arms of silver, his belly and thighs of brass, his legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. The dream was afterward interpreted by Dan-el the prophet. The image represented four universal kingdoms which ruled i earth in ancient times, one after another - the the bny lnomn ia ann. Medo- Persian, Gthreecil aan st, universal kingdom upon the earth. Let us The Roman was notice the prophecy. " Thou sawest tilila stone was cut out without hands which is rmo ont eanthde ei Imaya_ gaenudp tfheeetmthinat pwieeerees. of, Ver. 34. The stone cut out without hands obnraklleis was interpreted as follows in verse 44. " And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed : and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever." The Word here plainly declares that sometime in the reign of these kingdoms God would set up his everlasting kingdom. The bur-den of the dream was locating the time of the establishing of the kingdom of God. The dream was to make known to the king what would be in the latter days. Ver. 28. Christ appeared in the end of the world. Heb. 1 : 2. The beginning of the gospel age, in fact the entire gospel age, is termed the latter days, last days, etc. See Heb. 1: 2 1 John 2: 18 1 Tim. 4 : 1. Again it is stated that the stone smote the image upon his feet. This stone was the kingdom of God. ( Compare verse 34 and verse 44 of Dan. 2.) The feet were a part of the Roman empire. Hence, we conclude the kingdom of God must have been in existence in the days of the Roman empire, which fell A. D. 476. And we are fully informed by the voice of Scripture and history that the kingdom of God was fully established and smote this last of heathen kingdoms which fell to ruins un-der the increasing light of Christianity. But when did the prophecy of Dan. 2 : 44 of the time of the establishing of the king-dom of God reach its fulfilment ? We answer at the first advent of Jesus Christ. " Now that after John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching, the gospel of the kingdom of God, and say-ing, The time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God is at hand." Mark 1 : 14 : 15. Jesus here tells us the time is fulfilled. What. time ? The time of the fulfilment of the prophecy, of the establishing of the king-dom of God on earth. The time is ful-filled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Could language be plainer ? Christ was sent from heaven by God the Father in-vested with authority to establish his glorious kingdom here upon earth. The first thing he began to preach was the gos-pel ( glad tidings) of the kingdom, urging men to seek the kingdom, press into the time kki iingdo d hoofm mah sainnhddi kingdom eprovin vnebdtyh feho rihearts s t theea cehaoit n tfa men. s the ha -- Christ labored for three and one half years collecting material for his kinnggd oomm and when he expired on the cross he breathed these dying words, " It is finished." His work on earth was done, that is the personal work. He thenceforth ascende d t ot the Father, sent his Spirit into the heeaarrttss of his followers and salvation work began. Shortly after we hear oneof thee • i nspi• red apostles break forth in the following lan-guage : " Who hath deliveruesd ffrom the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dre aor nS. " Col. 1: 13. To become a subjecto offthh• i s k• ingdom means a deliverance from eth pe owers of darkness, and as a resulotf deli• verance it is declared he has translated ( transferred) us into the kingdom of his deeaarr Son. We here have the kingdom de. We boldly declare that this etsey proo" ff111th5at the kingdom of God, which was never to be destroyed, is in existence, and ever y seal delivered. from the power of darkness is a living subject of the same. Kingdoms have arisen and fallen; still God's kingdom marches triumphantly onward until to-- day she is a great mountain, filling the whole earth. The gospel of the kingdom is being preached to all nations as a witness to every creature. Earthly kingdoms and monarchies may arise and flourish aid crumble to dust. yet she will continue to stand as long as the, sun and moon shall shine. Yea, she will outlive this earth, and abide forever with Christ in eternity after this world is burned up. We will now bring forward proof that Christ built his church, of which it is also said, " The gates of hell shall not prevail - against it." " And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it," Mat. 16: ls. Here we have the declaration from the lips of the Son of God that. he was going to build his church. Christ was the only one ever authorized to build a church, and he is the sole founder of the church of God. The church is a divine' institution not built by any man or set of men, but b y the Lord Jesus Christ. " The gates of hell shall not prevail against it." This proves very clearly that the church Jesus built could not he destroyed : it is indestructible. We may as well say that salvation ceased to exist as to assert that the church was de-stroyed during the dark ages, and had to be reorganized in these latter days by spe-cial men chosen for this purpose. It is true the church has indeed passed through the apostasy. and was for centuries largely hidden away under the rubbish of man-made doctrines. yea, false doctrines of eve-ry description. But in the midst of all this the church still lived. Jesus had de-clared the gates of hell could not prevail against it. To prove the church was de-stroyed or hell prevailed against it, would be to prove that Jesus lied. Though all hell has ever been, and is still arrayed a-gainst the divine church of the Bible, it was built to stand. The devil has used eve-ry invention hell could devise to destroy the church, but all in vain. She has waded through blood. stood the storms of ages, fiery serpents have hissed at her feet in the deserts of sin, foes have ever assailed her. With such a divinely constructedchurch as given in the above scriptures, we can see for the church of God to fail would mean for the Word of God to fail, yea, the plan of salvation would prove a humbug. Even Cod himself would have to fail if this structure failed. Since this is a work of God and in of man, the conquest is between God and the devil. Can the devil overthrow this divine • structure? Nay, verily. when Christ built his church he completely outwitted the devil. The devil was outdone. and well he knew it. By h ell-ish schemes he has concocted to counterfeit the true church and change the teaching of the Word of God. Since the church d God contains all saved people, there can but one. The church of God contains every saved person on earth of every land and clime, every race and color. Men can not add the . members to the church, neither the subjects to the kingdom. A man might as well invite people - to himself for the re-ception of salvation, as to invite the peo-ple for admission into the church; the two processes are one and the same. The work of salvation makes us church members to the fullest extent. Thank God for the church against which hell can not prevail. We, no doubt, can all see by this time that all this latter- day man- made church-ism is simply a Satan- invented fraud, to divide the people of God, and counterfeit the true church: Furthermore we can also see the blindness of teaching the future establishment of the kingdom of God upon the earth, since we have previously shown that God's people to- day are enjoying the very experience that makes them subjects of the kingdom of God. GALENTAN. 4, ENTER ye in at the strait gate: for-wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be that go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that mid it." Mat. 7: 13, 14. Here Christ spoke of two ways, one broad, the other narrow, but said the way is narrow which leadeth unto life. By this we must travel the narrow way. ' And they sent out unto him their dis-ciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God iii truth, neither carest thou for any man : for thou regardest not the person of men." Mat. 22 : 16. e see by the above text that - Jesus taught the true way of God. Further he says, " I am the way, the truth and the Join]. 14: 6. Here Jesus makes plain the way of truth and life. We learn by the teaching of the apostles that they taught the same way as Jesus. " And it came to pass as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her mas-ters much gain by soothsaying : the same followed Paul and us and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which show unto us the way of salvation." Acts 16 : 16, 17. The apostles taught the way of salvation. hew dinerent it would be in the world to-day if every one who pretends to preach would get salvation; then they could teach others. We find in this way, salvation; in other ways, destruction. ** Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name uuderheaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." Acts 4: 12. Sometimes we ask people the question, Are you saved? They sometimes are heard to reply, I belong to the church. Do you live free from sin: Oh, no; our preacher says we can not live without committing more or less sin every day. Here you see he does not teach the way Paul taught. lie taught the way of salvation, as we have seen in one of our Scriptures in this lesson. It is a holy way : " And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not Hass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein." Isa. 35: S. There are no sinners in the holy way. Says one, There are good and bad in all churches. Yes, but not in God's church. If you are in a church where there are egad and bad, you are commanded to come out, and if you do not obey, you are sim-ply on the broad way which leads to de-struction, - As for God, his way is per-fect; the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him," 2 Sam. 22: 31. God's way is a perfect way, yea, a holy way. Go through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, east up the highway gather out the stones; lift up a standard ofr the people. Behold, the Lord hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. And they shall call them The holy people, The redeemed of the. Lord: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken." Isa. 62: 10- 12. The people in the Bible way are redeemed by the blood of Christ. Hence he says, " Awake, awake; put on thy strength, 0 Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, 0 Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean." Isa. 52: 1. The way of God is a clean and holy way, no sinners in it. Some say, " I think they are few who do not commit sin." True, " few there be that - find it." Christ traveled this narrow way. " For even here-unto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should fallow his steps: who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. 1 Pet. 2: 21, 22. The Bible tells us how we shall be directed: " Righteous-ness shall go before him and shall set us in the way of his steps. Psa. 85: 13. Be-hold, how plain. Next we will notice who God will teach the way of salvation. " Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will he teach sinners in the way. The meek will he guide in judgment : and the meek will he teach his way." Psa. 25: 8, 9. It is the meek ( humble) whom God will teach the way. " For • the Lord taketh pleasure in his people : he will beautify the meek with salvation." Psa. 149: 4. God will teach sinners the holy way if they are humble and willing to be taught. " Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein." Jer. 6: 16. Oh, how true! many people see the true way, but it is too strait for them. But there are a few people who are honest in heart and are seeking the way to Zion. - In those days, and in that time, saith the Lord, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go, and seek the Lord their God. They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thither-ward, saying, Come, and let us join our-selves to the Lord in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten. My people hath been lost sheep : their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains : they have gone from mountain to bill, they have for-gotten their resting- place." Jer. 50: 4- 6. While some are asking the way to Zion, behold, false shepherds meet them on the way and deal out to them a false way. They will exhort the people with these words : - Join some church." But the Bible says, - they went from mountain to bill ;" that is, they left one man- made church and joined another. Still God calls them lost sheep. Dear bewildered soul, listen to the Savior's call. " Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy- laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart : and ye shall find rest unto your souls." Mat. 11: 28, 29. Be-hold how different the advice of man and the exhortation of Christ. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all." Isa. 53: 6. Here we see God sent his only Son to bear the sins of the people, and to bring the people to the knowledge of the true way. The people were in need of a good, true shepherd, so Christ came to call the people together in one body, or fold, and all those who are honest in. heart hear and obey his call. - My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow pie." Praise God! The prophet spoke of the shepherd on this wise: " For thus saith. the Lord God; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them. out. As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are seat-tered so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day." Beek. 34: 11, 12. Jesus Christ came into this world to bring light and to establish the true way and call his people together in one fold ( church). Jesus says, " One fold and one shepherd." John 10: 16. " And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth be-fore them, and the sheep follow him - for they know his voice." John 10: 4. Praise God for the true shepherd! I hear his voice saying, " This is the way, walk- ye in it." Isa. 30: 21. Most gladly will I fol-low his steps. While Jesus was tempted and tried while here upon earth, we find some people to- day following by his side. " These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth." Rev. 14: 4. " For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls." 1 Pet. 2: 25. to show that • esent the same thing. But this is ' the testimony of God's chil-dren: " And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God [ true way] and eternal life." 1 John 5: 19, 20. Oh, bless the Lord for the true way. Those who follow Christ receive spiritual food, also eternal life. " And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand." John 10: 28. Next we will briefly consider man's way. " There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." Prov. 14 : 12. How sad indeed. Many are the poor souls in this terrible ditch of sin. " Broad is the way which leads to destruction, and many there be which go in. thereat." " There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness." Prov. 30: 12. Just think of this, dear reader, " a generation" in a deceived condition. Are you one of them? Listen! " Good understanding giveth fa-vor: but the way of transgressors is hard." Prov. 13: 15. If you are in sin you are traveling a hard road, and a road that will land you into the terrible place pre-pared only for the devil and hie angels. Pearisburg, Va. I feel led by the Spirit of God to write my testimony. I was converted at the age of fourteen; joined the Campbellite sect and remained with them about four years, and found out they were not right. I left them and joined the M. E. sect, and re-mained with them about ten years, and finding they were not living up to God's Word, I left them and joined the Mission-ary Baptist sect, and remained with them about two years, finding no relief or com-fort to my soul. Although I did not doubt my salvation, or sanctification, as I was sanctified in a meeting held in this place, and lived up to all the light I knew, until a meeting was held here last March. On account of being sick I was unable to at-tend the meeting, but was visited and showed plainly the one body, or the one church of God, and I at once accepted the truth. I found in God's Word. that there was but one church, and that is the church of God, which is a feast to my soul, and that I can be fed in the presence of my enemies. How precious it is to our souls to kmow if the world turns against us, God is for us. I would rather walk with Jesus alone than to be mixed up with the sects and confusion as I once was. I praise the Lord for the evening light shown me by his blessed Word. Only LSA o of us here accepted the truth. We have Sunday-school every Sunday morning and take the Shining Light for the children to use in Sunday- school, and they take great delight in the papers and the Sunday- school work. We have prayer- meeting on Sunday night, and on Thursday night. God always meets with us and blesses us. Last August I was anointed for healing, and was healed through faith in God. Several physicians had waited on me, but I found no relief. We had another meeting on the 2d of January. Three of our chil-dren were converted, two girls and one boy, also a neighbor boy. All of them take part in Sunday- school and prayer-meeting. Several others are about to step out on God's Word, and accept the blessed truth. Pray earnestly for the blindfolded people of this place. Yours in the one body, Mrs. Ada A. Johnson. Nevada Mills, Ind. I want to tell what the Lord has done for me. He heals my diseases and keeps me every day. If you feel in-capable of doing much good make up your mind to get all the good you can when you reach there. One of the surest ways to get good is to obey the Word as it goes forth, and not set your own judgment against the ministry whom God uses to pour forth his burning truth. If it is different from your preconceived ideas, settle it in your heart that the Word is truth. If it cuts you off repent and get in line with God. If it suits you and you find you are made glad, and your soul is at peace with God, give public testimony at the first opportu-nity. Do not think that you have to testify in every meeting. Do not criticise, but obey the Word. Reader, we are fellow travelers to eterni-ty, and are still in communication with each other. What is your object in life? Remember that we are free- will agents here, but that privilege is only granted us in this life. Your future will be what you choose to make it, either by obeying the gospel and inheriting happiness in heaven, or continuing your own way and spending eternity with the lost. He looks down upon them with love and tenderness just as much as he did upon us when we were entangled therein. We can have a real love and tenderness for the individual, and not have any compro-mise in us either; we can give them the real plain answers from God's Word. But God tells us to speak the truth in love. They will look at the manner in which it is presented to them, and if it is in a raspy way they will resent it; but if we speak in the spirit of meekness and give the straight Word, they have nothing to re-sent. God's Word tells us the servant of God must not strive, but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves, if God peradventure will give them repent-ance to the acknowledging of the truth, and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil who are taken captive by him at his will. She expects to be a worker in the Home. Many of the dear brothers and sisters are writing that they expect to enjoy the camp- meeting with us. With some of these the way is seemingly hedged up, and they earnestly request our prayers that God will " make a way where - there is no way." We had ' a most precious ordinance ser-vice recently. There were about one dozen baptized, among whom were several of the older Trumpet children who have " bid the world a last farewell." SPREAD THE TRUTH WITH YOUR TRUMPETS Dear Readers : If any of you have any back numbers of the Trumpet that you do not know where to put out, will you please send them to me? It seems the last few days my soul has been stirred with the real-ization that the devil is doing all he can to get his literature before the people, then ought not the servants of God, each one individually, to do all in their power to-spread the pure literature ? I have been visiting some lately in the neighborhood where a Christian science lady has been, - and has been leaving her literature. To- day, while visiting an old friend who has been away from the city for a number of years, I met the lady. She had been treating my friend's husband. I felt sure the Lord had led me there, so I looked to him for an opening. I asked her if they believed in doctors, and she said, No. My friend said, You do not either, do you? I said, no; for some years I had taken the Lord as my physician. She, of course, thought then that we were of one faith. She asked me if I was a member of some church. Dearly beloved in the Lord, call to remembrance how the ear-ly Christians endured trials and tempta-tions with patience and how earnestly they labored before God in prayer for the sal- - ration of souls, and the perfection and . reservation of their brethren, and imitate their example. Do not leave the burden of the camp-meeting expenses to rest on the local church. You are the one that comes to the meeting and makes it expensive, and that reaps the greatest benefits, and you are the one under obligation before God to help bear the financial burden as much as you are able. Many come to camp- meeting who are really poor and who would do all they could to bear the expense if they were able, but you are able and God expects you to do your share. To Every Local Church of God: Such general gatherings of the church of God as the soon coming camp- meeting at Moundsville, W. Va., will be is very neces-sary. After the church at Jerusalem was scattered by persecution, except the apos-tles, the ministers thus scattered endeav-ored to meet in a general gathering at Jerusalem ( once a year), at Pentecost. Every minister of the church of • God should make earnest endeavors to be at this meeting. It is highly important that you ( ministers) should attend this meet-ing. A special meeting for ministers once every day during the entire session will be held, the import of which can not be over estimated. Every local church should see to it that their overseer or elder is privileged to attend this meeting, and the church in general should assist the trav-eling ministry in getting there also. I will expect more than one hundred ministers to be present, and not less than 800 to 1000 saints in regular attendance this year. To be sure, a meeting of this kind will cost something, and it is not right for the pub-lishing company to have to meet these ex-penses, neither should the preachers have to pay half the expenses as they did last year. The proper manner in which money should be raised to meet the expenses of these general meetings has been somewhat perplexing hitherto; but I believe the Spir- have it of the Lord solved this problem during our last assembly- meeting in Chicago. In several instances ( unsolicited) local churches considered the matter and the Spirit of the Lord moved on them to make up a bounty and send it to the assembly to defray the expenses. I felt deeply im-pressed that this was truly " apostolic," and especially when a bounty of $ 18.55 was sent from the dear workers at the Trumpet Office. I confess this touched a spot in my heart that ordinary offerings seldom touch. For some weeks I have felt impressed to write this letter to the local churches and stir you up to make up a bounty and send it by the elder or some brother going from your assembly to the general camp-meeting at Moundsville. In case no one can go, send by draft or postal order. Let eve-ry local assembly of the church of God at-tend to this matter at once, every one whose heart stirreth him up to make a free- will offering. " Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him." Make up your bounty and send it in to the Gospel Trumpet Pub. Co., stating that it is for the expenses of the camp- meeting. G. L. C. TAE CHILDREN'S HOME. To All Who Love God : Greeting. The Lord is sure-ly prospering, and a group of nearly twen-ty more happy, bright- eyed and intelligent children, it would be hard to find. Cheer-ful obedience and good order makes every-thing move off as it should. The blessed Holy Spirit fills the hearts of nearly all. So a spirit of prayer and praise rests up-on the home. The farm is being steadily improved, the buildings put in better shape, yards clean and tidy, giving evidence of case and in-dustry. Bro. Foote will need help to tide them over till the new crops can begin to be utilized. If the season is good there will be plenty of vegetables and considerable grain harvested. What he needs now is a few bushels of potatoes ( at least twenty) to carry them over the camp- meeting and till the new crop comes in, also corn or oats for the horses, flour and other provisions for the family. No doubt the saints near by, as in Holt, Decatur, Hopkins, etc., can each aid in the work as the Lord has pros-pered them, and no burden be felt by any one. May God bless all in doing what they can for this precious work among these dear children " that the abundant grace, through the thanksgiving of many, may redound to the glory of God." Yours in the love of Jesus, J. M. Aikin. Grand Junction, Mich. • One time when my little girl was three years old, before I got the truth, I made her a silk dress and did not think she was old enough to know the difference from other goods but when she got it on and some little girls came to see her she looked rather dignified, and said to them, " I have a silk dress, and you have not." There was a pang went through my heart to think she would speak so and hurt their feelings. It has occurred to my mind that we can act and speak in an unwise way regard-ing the precious truth we have received. • We must remember we were once, as Paul said to the Corinthian brethren, Gentiles carried away unto these dumb idols even as we were led; but now since we have been delivered and baptized by the one Spirit into the one body, we must not look down in scorn upon those; but be gentle and pa-tient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves, remembering the con-dition we were in. Harshness will not win, and if gentleness will not, we have cleared ourselves, and it gives the devil no occasion against us, and no room for accusation. A brother said to me one day, I feel condemned every time I talk to others, and wanted to know why. To- day I had a let reminding me of what he said, which- ter says, I have found where the trouble was. It was I doing the talking instead of Jesus, and I talked too raspy. There is the se-cret. If we can realize, as Paul did, that we are dead and Christ is living in us, and that we have no part, nor does our old humanity come up with a frown or toss of the head, then we have gained a great victory. If this body were dead in a literal sense, it would not move; there would be no impulsive moves; so if we die and Jesus takes possession, what he does and says will be just right; for be has the mind of the Lord. The Bible class often finds it profitable to use a lesson from the new book, " Bible Readings." While we make use of the means we have mentioned to encourage the interest of the scholars, yet our aim is, of course, to win the children to Jesus first of all, and also to get their minds stored with the precious Scripture texts, and to get them acquainted with a knowl-edge of the Word, so far as possible.
