EAR TRUMPET READERS, seek the better land. Let your present home be a preparation for, and a pilgrimage, to a home in heaven. You are now in the wilderness beset on every side, by en-emies. Go forward, you are now in the deep vale, in the lowly retreats of a pil-grims life. Brethren, get up higher, there is better things for you, be thorough, and faithful, until death, and you shall receive a crown of life, be patient in tribulation, overcoming the world. The storms will soon subside, and the clouds disappear, and the Sun of righteousness, burst in up-on von, the winter gloom and desolation, will soon pass away, and sweet fields ar-rayed in living green, and rivers of delight will spread them selves out before your enraptured vision. Remember, that the suffering of this present time, is not wor-thy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in our hearts. Jr a few RUMP ET. Soon this typ-ical homestead shall be exchanged for the antitypical home, and we shall unite the songs f/ f everlasting joy, and sing unto Him that loved us, and washed us in His own precious blood. To Him be praise and glory, for ever and ever. Let the hope of soon entering that hap-py home, stimulate you to increased ardor in the cause of your Master. I think some who will read this paper, have snow white Locks, and wrinkled brow, and faded cheeks, and these tell you that soon your pilgrimage will be ended, your tent homes dissolved, and Oh if you have made God, your strength and your portion for ever, you will welcome death with joy yea you will be anxious to lay aside these gar-ments, of toil and conflict, and soar away to that better home, where the wicked cease from troubling, and the weary are at rest, for ever to be with God. " Even so come Lord Jesus." Let ru e go, I fain would follow, • Where I know their steps have passed, For beyond lifes heaving billows, Finding home, and heaven, at last. While my exile heart is pining, To behold my Fathers face, There in His own brightness shining, Beckon me to that blessed place. Your sister, saved and sanctifiedby His precious blood. 1 Go to the place where there is " much I water."— John 3: 23. Acts 8 : 36, 37. 2 Go down int,) the water— Matt. 3: 16. Acts 8: 38, 39. 3 Be baried with Christ in - baptism. Rom 6, and Col. 2. - Now any honest, sincere, regenerated child of God, that will do just as these scriptures read, will from ' that time know of the doctrine, will be '" blessed in the deed," with the confirmation of God's Spirit. Therefore it is only the doer of the above scriptures that know positively the mind of God concerning water baptism. And all that relbse to do the Word, but stand aloof; and question this burial with Christ, simply occupy the attitude toward this command of Christ, that the infidel ! does toward the whole Bible. But says one, the Word says they were baptized " WITH water." And does not that edicate that the water was applied to the disciple, and not he plunged into it? Not necessarily. These scriptures refer TO the element in which the act was per- - I- brined. Both baptism into water and into the Spirit are spoken of. And not being performed without water, nor without the / Spirit, it was with them. But with George Campbell, a Scotch presbyterian transla tor of the four Gospels, we charge down-right dishonisty upon the translators in the substitution of the word " with," for the prot er word ID. Though a Presbyterian, he renders it every time, in. And he re-hakes. the translators for the sin of having wilfully wrested the scriptures for the sake of their partisan creed: He says the prep-osition should be in, not. only because that isits literal meaning, but because " the word baptize, both in sacred authors, ( Bible) and classical writings, literally means to dip, to plunge, to immerse. It is always construed suitable to this mean-ing." And this very learned Prebyterian translator, says that the word " Baptize never means sprinkle, or pour." Hence it is just as redictlous to say " I baptize you with water." as to say " I dip you with water." The verb baptize expressing the act of induction, the preposition must be in or into. But let us now open the Greek Testament, at the third of Matthew, also open your common version at the same place. The very first word of the chapter is " In"—" In those days." etc. Now look in the Greek and see that the word is EN. Again in the same verse we have these words : “ in the wilderness;" the preposi-tion " in" is from the Greek EN. In the 3d verse, in occurs again—" The voice of one crying in the . wilderness"— and is ren-dered frem EN. The . next instance is in the 6th verse, " And were baptized of him in Jordan." The " In" is from the Greek EN. Now coming down to the 11th verse, we read " I indeed baptize you with water ** * He will baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire." But what is the Greek word from which the preposithiou " with" is taken? It is EN, the same that is translated in, nearly every time it occurs in the New Testament. Now it must be clear to all, that there can be no reason or honesty in ch anging the translation of the Greek word EN, from its regular English in, to with, in that verse. It must be ap-parent to all, that if to translate ENIINDATI," with water, " EN TE ERNMO," should be trans-lated " with the wilderness, instead ofin the wilderness. But a child can see that t were rediculous. If the Greek word EN means with. it should have been so trans-lated in verse 6, then it would read, " and were baptized of him with Jordan." But they could not translate wrongly here, without every body seeing their dishonesty. The Emphatic DIaglott, H. T. Anderson, Bible union, and George , Campbell, all have rendered it in, according to the o-riginal. And the latter did so against the creed and. precept of his own sect. The late revised Version, for the sake of their eprinleling creeds retained the " with," but their conscience disturbing them, they put it " IN" in the margine, thus acknwl-edging to the original text. And the A-merican part of that body translation, have pue it on record at the close of the book, tha, t, they wished to put it " in" in the trans-lation. This WRITRING, or twisting of the Scripture, to favor their dark age, papal sprinkling, is too staring to be hid. As Geo. Campbell Bays, concerning thi living " wan." But how shall we know itt the'-.;: nidinance ? By doing the * 011 let ' use do as the Word ments to be warped by the sentiments, and customs of the sect which they pre-fer. The true partisan, of whatever de-nomination, always inclines to correct the diction of the Spirit by that of the party." If the New Testament bads said, " We are sprinkled with him in baptism," would not every advocate of that poPish rite say that it were settled, and that they were right, beyond dispute ? It does not say that, but it does say that " we are buried with Him in baptism.' Now every one knows that to be bnried is to be put clear under. So according to the plain words of God, no one is baptized in water, unless eubmurged under the water. But this burial in baptism, sprinklers try to wade by saying that it is spiritual bap-tism. But if that were even so, it would not weaken the force of the' words one particle. For baptism must be the same act or opporation, whether in one ele-meat or the other. When John said, " I indeed baptize in water, but He shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost,' can any imagine that that same verb repeated in the same verse represents two different actions. This were an utter confounding of language. Anyone can see that what-ever the verb baptize means, it must de-note the same act in either water or the Spirit. Except that in the one case the act is a literal one, in the visible substance water, and in the other, it is a spiritual operation in the invisible element, the Holy Spirit, the baptismal act must be the same thing, being expressed by the sarneword. Therefore if the Apostle metait spiritual baptism when he said " we are buried with Him in baptism," it would prove immersion just as strongly. as if he directly alluded to water baptism, Apr the act is the same. The glorious sanctifying baptism of Holy Spirit, is simply clothed in figurative language, based uprn, and shadowed forth from the literal act of - wa-ter baptism. But that the words, " buried with Him in baptism," in Rout. 6 : 4, al-luded to the literal ordinance is very evi-dent. Read verses 3 & 4, know ye not that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death ? Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism. Now ill the third verse, baptism into Christ is of the Spirit, " Fir by one Spirit are we all batiied into one body." 1 Cor. 12: 13. And when thus inducted into Christ, we are baptized. into His death. That is, being merged into Christ, we are not only merged into, and made partakers ol His life, His peace. His joy, but neces-sarily ', are are baptized into, and become sharers of His death. Therefore, i. e., be-cause of this fact, we are buried with Him by baptism. As the Spirit baptism pro-duces death to the world, water baptism, a literal burial, was instituted of Christ, as a monument of that fact. Baptized into Christ, lion His death. " therefore we are buried : tit Hint in baptism." The two can/ ( it he the same , for the latter is based upoe, ltd because of the former. Hence the baptism into Christ is by the) Spirit, and the burial is literal. Therefore the act of water baptism is a burial in water, hence an immersion. This fact is clearly shown by the preposition connected with the verb. " Baptized in Jordan," " baptized in water," " baptize you in the Etoly Spirit." In all these and other places, baptism is follow-ed by in, ( en in the Greek,) which shows that it is not an induction hence an im-mersion. There is another preposition still stronger, that is connected with the verb baptize : namely cis, literly meaning into. " And that all were immersed into ( eis) Moses in the cloud. r-- Empliatie Dictglott. " For indeed, by one Spirit we are all immersed into ( cis) one Body."— Cor. 12: 13.— Diaglott. " Baptized by one Spirit into one body".— common ver-sion. Mark. 1 : 9. We read that Christ was * baptized in Jordan." The direct rendeing from the Greek in the Diaglott is, " And was dipped by John into ( eis) the Jordan." Now this Greek word eis is the one from which our preposition in-to is rendered. We have counted 590 in-stances of this word translated " iuto," in the conarnon verson. Thus we ice that the etymology rift : baPtism makei it ith.= mersinu. Would it not be redicalous to . The " old leaven," the deluded, and serpent beguiled, were fully purged out, and the " Church of the First Born," was brought out clean and pure, from this taint. The whole was a complete victory, over the devils attempt to destroy the flock of God. Since God by visions, and revelations, has brought to light the abominable works of darkness, one of the parties hag been arrested, and is now un-der a thousand dollar bail bond. That deceived and deluded preacher. Roberts, has further proved his inter- fellowship, with the disgraceful set, by working for the guilty parties, and going on their bail bond. EAR BRETHREN IN THE LORD: I feel moved in the Spirit to write a few lines to the readers of the GOSPEL TRUMPET, that they may have a part of my experience. and light of the wonderful re-demption that Christ has purchased for me, and not for me only, but for all humanity that are willing to have His Spirit, dwell in their hearts. It is over three years since I got the light and have felt His great power to cleanse from all sin, and to be kept spot-less. The children of the Heavenly King, must first be purified, before they can be kept pure. Praise God. for His willing-ness to both save and keep, lost and ruined man. And although I have enjoyed His presence, and power to save, through these few years, never have I so much as in the last few weeks. I am glad and thankful to God, that I do know what it is to hunger and thirst after righteousness, and to be filled. Praise God! so we are at rest and all sin has died out. " No room for it no need of it Ad glory within. Choose it before mirth Tin heaven on earth, Repent ye for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. A kingdom of righteousness set up on earth, by the " King of Kings; " peace on earth and good will to man." The Spirit of Christ in us " The Church of the living God." One Body of which Christ is the Head each member is set in its proper place by Christ Himself; all are under His controle— No schism in the Body, none are allowed: held together by the love of God. There is a Church on earth, a liv-ing assembly; One with the other do love to meet. And love to wash each others feet. I am glad we can express our feelings and give light to each other, through the GOSPEL TRUMPET. I do hope that every saint on earth will throw in their mite, that has an opportunity, and may God add His Spirit's power more than ever before, until all shall know the truth. And the honest heart shall find their way from sects and darkness, from creeds, and priest- craft, unto the pure and living Church. Oh how many thousand are led along, deluded and kept in darkness, by their sect Idol; taught that they can never be free from sin, need not expect to, as long as they live on this earth. They have gone to sleep, through delusion, and will sleep on, until time shall sweep them off, and they awake in the gulf of dispair. " Awake! Awake !! thou that sleepest" and flee to the city of refuge the New Jerusalem. Let every saint blow the trumpet, until " the whole earth shall hear." - Up now, ' let your light shine as a city set on a hill that cannot be hid." Up! now is the time, say, that the " people were sprinkled into Moses, or poured into Moses" " By one Spirit we were all Sprinkled into one body)/ " Know ye not that so many of us as were sprinkled into Jesus Christ were sprinkled into His death?" " Christ was sprinkled of John into Jordan." Any one can see that sprinkle, or pour, cannot be put in the stead of the Greek word baptizo or baptize. Therefore, baptize does not mean sprink-le. But when properly translated dip, or immerse, it corresponds with the prepo-sition in, and into. " I immerse you in wa-ter," Christ was immersed " of John into Jordan." So by the meaning of the word, is universally agreed upon by all Lexicog-raphers, and scholla, rs, and by the connec-tion in the Scriptures, baptize only means dip or immerse. In verse 10 Christ connects this washing with moral cleansing. Showing that it sustains a relation to the purification of the soul by His blood. Baptism is a figurative, " washing away of thy sins." Acts 29: 16. The washing of the saints feet, being con-nected with Christ's " new commandment" of perfect love, may represent the cleansing of entire sanctification. The washing of the feet, will represent, the purification of our nature, to our extremities, " to the ut-termost. And as we tread the earth with our feet, this ordinance represents that grace, whereby we fully " escape the cor-ruption that is in the World through lust." It is the water of entire separation be-tween us and the world. The word ordain in the text- Titus 1: 5, Why not feet- washing an ordinance? is from the Greek word KATHISTEM which 1st Christ washed the disciples feet. means, " to appoint, or set in place, or 2nd He did it as an example or patter order, or to constitute." Constitute in for them to imitate. one sense means to make, but not in the sense of to make or qualify, which alone is the work of Divinity wrought by the Holy Spirit. As the Scripture saith, " a Bishop ( or Elder) must be blameless" or perfect, and the Holy Spirit perfects through the blood of the great Shepherd of the sheep, our Lord Jesus. For ordination in this sense we have the Greek word POIE0 which means to make, in the sense in which Jesus made, and ordained the Apostles through the gift and , power of the Holy Spirit. This is the very point where all those who have not the knowledge of the truth, flounder, and froth Paul's epistle to Titus 1 : 5. For of the Sa yler, until over three hundred this cause left I thee ( Titus) in Crete that years after. Then those Shepherd to " watch for their souls." He who are always seeking occasion, set up a was to set in order and ordain Elders in ery of false prophets! false prophets! every City. Now the order in this text is because those ordained had thus fallen from the Greek word Dietatasso which away. Upon those grounds the Apostles means to darrange thoroughly or through- and teachers in the early Church might be out." To set in order is to arrange thor- proven false. But let us purge ourselves from all the vessels of dishonor. " Let them alone they be blind leaders of the blind if the blind lead the they tthall all fail into the ditch." They are " ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." But " all Scripture given by inspuration of God, is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteous-ness that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." Such will that man of God be, who holdeth fast the faith word. Amen ! - 0- Is the washing of the Saints feet an or-dinance of the New Testament to be ob-served now? We answer, that if the teach-ing a Christ Jesus can be relied on at all, as ever meaning what it says, the above is positively a standing institution of Christ's Church. By reference to Matt. 26; 21- 27. Mark 14: 18- 24. John 13: 21- 30. we see that Bath the Lord's supper and feet- washing wereinstitated by the same Jesus the same night, and during the same pass- over meal. Both therefore are sustained by equal au-thority. Please open your Bibles now and read with lie John 13. The first verse as-sooiateft the love of Christ with His act of washing their feet. So that is an eapres-s• ion of His love. And in verses 34, 35. of the same chapter, He says, " A new com-mandment I give unto you, That ye love one another as I have loved you.*** By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one for another." Now while this new covenant of love, is to extend to a willingness to lay down our life for the brethren, it includes the manifesta tion of love, by His new commandment to wash one another's feet, by which He also showed that He " loved them to the end." " And supper being ended." ver. 2 This is evidently an incorrect rendering. The first three verses all together is an ' adverbial element qualifying, verse 1 When did lie rise from supper? The first three verses answer the question. And it begins with, " Now before the feast of the paseoveir," ate. This is the same meal spo-ken of in the second verse. Now the feast as supper, could not be over, " before the feast." The chapter also speaks of them eating afterward. The EMPHATIC DIAGLOTT translates, " and as supper was prepar- loyeth me. And he that loveth me, him ing." " THE BIBLE Ulmer," renders it, will my Father love," Does not this make " And supper being served." These reh- the soul happy? " If ye know these things derings are consistent with the facts of the happy are ye if ye do them." Then we whole thapter Scriptures. may know these things. How can we How particular in giving the exact parts know them? The directions are plain. " If] who sturabl of this ordinance as Sot forth in Christ's any man shall do ills will he shall know oeylon confasi positive command, enjoining the practice, among the disciples, of the identical thing He had just performed unto them. Peter says " we ought to walk in His footsteps." That Christ is our example in all things, the Scriptures clearly teach: but there is not on receord to our knowledge a single act that Christ did, that He said at the time, " I have done this for an example, that ye should do unto each other as I have done unto you," except the case of this ordinance. It would appear that the Son of God fore- saw how the wisdom of this vorld would take exceptions to this humil-ty service, hence He enforced it just that much stronger than any other command. If any one doubts this ordinance of Christ I ask you to tell us how Christ could have made it any plainer. Suppose that Christ wished to establish such an observance how could He enjoin it any more clearly and positively than He has ? He performed the literal act of washing their feet that cannot lie denied. He then said He did it for anexample, that they should do to one another, the identical thin g that He had done. Then He enforces the command by, both the word " ought" and " should." " Ye ou ght to wash one anothers feet." Ought means " morally bound." Should S the same as shall, and is au imperative command. '' If ye know these things hap-. py are ye if ye do them."- ver. 17. What does, " do them," mean does it mean you need not do them? In this verse we have a special promise of happiness in doing this part of Christ's will. This is another point in which Christ has put special stress upon this ordinance. He that thinks himself happy in discarding the ordinances of ' Christ is deceived of the devil. and knows not what spirit he is of. " Ho that bath my com-mandments and keepeth them, he it is that to give som ordination, relating the The Apo builders; not knowing the authority given us by the . Holy Spirit. But they that have the unction from the Holy One know all things, - for the Spirit seatcheth all things. Let he enquire into the authority givena the teachers ' of the truth, by appealing to the written Word. In * Acts 14: 23. They ordained them Elders in evei- y- Church or congregation. Notice, who Ordained them Elders ? The Apostles, Paul and Barnabas who were teachers of- the Weed. After they themselves haying been ordained, as Pahl himself declares in both of hie . epia-ties to Tim. 1 Tim. 2 : r. 2 Tim. 1 : 11. Of which We have a record in Acte9: 15- 17. And in 13; 2, 3. Here we have his ordination_ in both senses. The first to make, from the, Greek woad POIEO, to qualify as the . Lord said, " I have appeared unto thee ' fon this purpose to are- s- E thee a inihister." - Which was by the gift - of the Holy Ghost., Acts 9 : - In the ' second sense ' which is the- part with which God honors His ministers, in Ants 13 : 2, 3. " Now there were in the Church that was at Antioch certain Prophets and teachers." What did they do? " As they ministered to, the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost saith, separate me, Saul and Barriabas for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and' prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away." Here we have the - word ordain in theeense of, to put in their proper place, or to send out. From the Greek Word Terinteti. Then we have another Greek word, CHEIROTONE0, Which conveys to our mired the manner in which the Evangelists and Teachers performed their part. The word CHEIROTONE0 means, to elect or ordain by laying on of hands, o- r imposition of hands and prayer. Thus the Apostles and teachers ordained Elders and Deacons in every Church. See Acts 6: G. 13: 2, 3. 14: 23. Titus le 4, 5. 1 Tim. 4: 14. 5: 22. In his first epistle he gives Timothy in the third chap. instructions in reference to the ordinations of Elders and Deacons, and tells him how to conduct himself' if he tarries long. In his second epistle he - instructs him again saying; " And the things that thou hat heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful inen who shall he able to teach others also." How was he - ta connnit or entrust to others the things which Paul had communicated to him. In the Emphatic translation it is entrust. . So he could entrust the case of the Churches to other faithful men; only by appointment or ordination. Hence it was not for a few select cases, as some affirm. Sister Thomas, experienced a change of heart, some years ago, and joined the M. E. sect, where she remained untill some over one year ago. Under the straight preaching of the Gospel, by Bro. Her testimeny on the Sunday of the 15th of March; was that God sanctified her soul, to do and suffer His will. On the Sunday eve before she died, some of the sisters came in as usual, to help take care of her during the night, about 12 ° clock they had prayer, and the Lord blesseb them all very much, the deceased offered up to God a fervent pray-er, asking Him to take her two dear little boys, into His own special care, and save her husband. They also asked where we found these stones that were so beau-tiful they had never seen any thing like them. As we were at work on one, we held it up in a position that they could look through it; it having already been polished on two sides. It was so pure in-side, so clear, and bright and sparkling, clearer than glass, that they wondered where we found such rare stones. We told them that they were just common stones, the same as those that were lying on the ground about us, and that we had gathered them from the roadsides and fields. They expressed much surplice that such beautiful material was in those rough, hard, ugly looking stones. We in-formed them. that they were changed while subjected to the process of polish-ishing. Here the scene changed and we saw the tower completed. The stones were all set in their proper place in the body of the tower, and they were so closely joined to-gether, that seems could scarcely be seen. It was a gradual slant from the founda-tion to the top. The top- stone was round andjust fitted on the tower. It was like the other stones, sparkling and bright, but in the center of this stone there was a blood red spot, and the stream of. light that shone every way from this stone, shone down through the rest of the tower. We could see the red and the rainbow hues streaming down through, and reflect-lug from each stone. —: o:— This tower is the Church God, the body I JERRY CITY 0., MAR. 16th 785. of Christ.
