Summary:Gospel Trumpet 1881-June 3, 1962, Vital Christianity June 10, 1962-Sept. 1996, One Voice June/July 2004-Apr/May 2007 Henry C. Sharpnadk. HEALING BY FAITH. - 4. 1= +. 41d+.— 93ehold they that sat in darkness, saw great light". he good Lord has given me such won-hderful light and faith in His name. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of thingsnot seen. By faith Noah beim,. warped of God with 3 being things not yet seen, prepared an ark for the saving of his house; by the . which he condemned the world, and became an heir of righteousness, which is of faith. Bless God But how do we get this faith? The - Word says, " So, faith cometh by hearing and hearing hi, the Word of God. Let us believe the Word even to the heal-ing of our bodies, as well as to the saving of our souls. I do praise God for this precious, Word. I am believing it through and through and living it every day. In Titus 1: 2, it says that God can not lie, neither will He change one jot or tittle of His Word; but we must meet his re- OSPEL THE DESOLATION OF BABYLON. • * 0* 4,— " Thus saith the Lord: behold I wiliraise tip against Babylon, and against them that dwell in the midst of them that rise up against Me, a destroying wind; and I will vend Unto Babylon fanners, that shall fan her, and shall empty her land : fir in the day of trouble they shall be against . her round about. Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul be not cut off in her iniquity for this is the time of tin Lord's vengeance He will render unto her a recompense. Babylon hath been a golden cup in the Lord's hand, that made all tine earth drunken : the na- . tions have drunken of her wine thererore the nations are mad. Babylon is suddenly fallen, and destroyed! howl for her: take balm for her paingso be she maybe healed. We would have healed Bayblon, but she is not healed : forsake her, and let us go every one into his own country : for her judgment reacheth, unto heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies. Jer. 51: 1, 2, 6- 9. What an awful picture is here drawn by the prophet. But, more impressive still is the awful words of the inspired prophet fulfilled. Some one asks where? On every hand as we look around us at', the cold graceless dead formal ecclesiastical world of denominationalism; we see the fulfillment of Jeremiah's words. _ Truly she has fallen, and become the habita-tion of devils. Rev. 18: 2. But some one says the word babylon has reference to sectism. Let us look at its definition : taken from babel, which means confusion, or disorder. Is there any other place on earth where there is more confusion than in the sects ? The word babel came from the confounding of the language of the people, when they were trying to " build us a tower that shall reach unto heaven". So in the denominations of to day. We see their language confounded; no two speaking the same thing. Thus bath God decreed that they shall fall in this, their one, and only point of unity, namely that of building a war of their own to reach unto heaven. So those builders said, " let it• make 218 a namedest we be scattered abroad, , Qike each sect is trying to build up their own name instead of Christ, and building tip the body of Christ, which is the one, and only true Church. Of which body every person becomes a member of Christ, the instant he is truly born Of the Spirit of God. Having no need of man's manifestation, whatever in the process of joining Christ's body, which is the- Church.— Col. 1: 18,24. But how the ? he Lord God shaZ2B LOW Vie UM ETand go with irhiriwinds debit does rack the brain of his devoteers in sect babylon, to keep them continually' Casco, Allegan Co. Mich. How true are the words of Paul to Timothy. 2- Tim. 4: 3,4. But thank God they shall proceed no further for their folly is being made manifest unto all men"- 2 Tim. 3: 9. From the days of paganism unto the present time, as The light of God has continued to shine, bright-er, and brighter upon the earth, the devil has tried to keep pace with the light trying to invent something just off the line of truth, in order to turn the minds of- the people in the wrong direction. He knows that the counterfeit nearest the genuine is the . most dangerous. And now we have reached the evenin g light, when the full light of the glorious Gospel ‘ of Christ is shining on the earth, showing that all creeds and. isms only tend to bring 1 such poor deluded souls, And enable Beni Thoughts. : 0: There is a brighter world The spirit tendeth Upward, on the strong wings Which fancy lendeth From eyes whence bitter tears. And as the Old creeds and disciplines have become stale and dead lettere, and no longer have any influence with the people, and the devil says: I am disgusted with them myself; let us have a new creed, and let us have more holiness teaching - connected with it, as the - tgeraecaht imt majuocrhit, ya nodf tthheeir ofoldll oowneerss dproa cntiocte it less. So he says: where will T find a man in all my realm upon whom I shall best- ow the honor of standing at the head of this new babel tower, I am about to build ? So in looking all his servants ' over, he concludes that he has found in S. B. Shaw of Dutton Mich; a man after his own heart, that shall fulfill all his will. So as Shaw- has long felt that ith was to his interest to stand at the head of some sect of rituals to be enforced upon his dev-otees, he very readily accepted the nomi-nation, and sets to work to compile the rituals, of the man- tower, called the itord- NESS ausshos, and starts out to propagate the same. Therefore the old fellow is becoming alarmed, as he sees the spell, under which he has held the people, being broken. Therefore he sees that the old routine of seetishness will no longer suffice to deceive the mind of the more candid thinking people, and as the light of Per-fect holiness of heart, which ' makes all God's people one, outside of alt sects, and division walls, completely delivering them out of the devil's powers, dawns upon the people, the devil sees that this threatens the destruction Of phis whole realm. And of all the disgusting soul crippling, God dishonor ing wcrk we ever - witnessed under the name of a revival meeting that was the worst. About 20 souls came to the altar. when the invitation was giveinand instead of instructing them how to take hold of God by faith, the nB. presiding elder got up, and said he did not think anyone corn potentto teach souls at the altar. , But they must be taught by the Spirit. So the dear souls struggled at the altar for some time, and finally they left as they came, ex-cept one young man who would not leave the altar, and they finally got around him, and sang and shouted till they got him worked up to that pitch, that he thought he had salvation. Amen. I praise God for a Bible salvation in His word, and am walling in all the light He gives me. Your sister in the Lord. Mrs. John grimes.* FOLLOWING JESUT A BOVE ALL THINGS. 1- n+ WHAT IS THAT TO THEE? FOLLOW thou 11E. It is real blessed to know that the Savior was once on earth; was manifest in the flesh and left us an example that we should follow His steps, who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth; and it is so blessed for us to have the mind of Christ, so as to do His will in all things. A person must besayed from all actual transgressions before he can follow Jesus indeed and in truth. They cannot have strife, divisions, backbitings, heresies among themselves and follow Jesus at the same time. He never was guilty- of, never left such an example, nor never. gave- any command to be such. When Jesus spoke the above text He was talk-ing- with Peter about how he loved Him. This was after He was crucified and rose. - Before He was crucified He told them that they would- be offended because of Him; and Peter affirmed Him that if all men forsook Him, he would follow Him even unto death, and Jesus, told him that before the cock would crow, he would de-ny Him thrice. But he did not believe'. Big " I" or self got in the way. He did. not consider that Jesus had given him strength to follow that far, or- to . do what he had. done. sanctifying power. While the Jewish maid backed him out and now there are devout men from all nations under heaven accusing them falsely, and before it was said truthfully. Did Peter run off and Say, brethren - hold the fort if you can the maid, backed me out . by. the truth, and now this multitude is aced's-ing me falsely, and I must take care of no one ? Day. He arose in the presence of all of them and withstood them, and con-trthieted their assertions; saying. These are not drunk as ye suppose, seeing it it but the ( bird hour of the day. And he went on to tell them, that was the fulfillment of the prophet Joel. Read-er have you the power of the HolyGhost that you can look a wicked man in the face when- they MSS the teachings - of God's truth, and falsely accuse you, and tell them of it, without fear„ yet in love, and tell them of God's truth in spite of their opposition. Think of what a victory for God by Peter opening fire upon the devil, with the power of God; 3000 souls won to Christ. If you are not fighting the devil, it is because you are in his clutches, and he is leading you captive at his will. It is a fight from here to glory. God help us to fight the good. fight to the end, fight sin on every hand. Be sure you repent, and let the Lord justify you freely and sanctify you wholly. 1 Thetis. 5: 23; then follow the example the Saviour left us to follow( 1 Pet .2: 21- 22) amid reproach and shame; for without you do this, hell - awaits you as your home through eternity. Heaven's- decree has gone forth. " With-out holiness, no man shall see the Lord", Heb. 12: 14. You say you are like Peter; you was once converted, but when the test conies,, you will deny the Lord. Do not go back on what You was once. How are you now ? If you are converted to God you will nct deny the Lord as long as you are justified. Peter was con-verted before he denied the Lord„ but he was not when he was engaged iu the act, For his conversion see Matt 18: 26 and Luke 10: 20. Peter's act in denying the - the Savior was like all others of that kind, preceded by a desire to do so, instead of standing up boldly for Him, and his fail - took place when he conceived that idea with an intent to do so. And. when Jesus told him how He would suffer and be crucified, Peter rebuked Him and said : be it far.- front Thee, Lord, this shall not be done unto Thee. He pretended to know more about Jesus' suffering than He did Himself; and when Jesus told him he would deny him, he contradicted Jesus and said : " Though all men forsake Thee, I wilhfollow Thee, even unto death"; but it came to pass as Jesus said and Peter found out that- Jesus knew something about him; and after Jesus arose and asked if he loved Him, he answered: " Yea Lord". ( i. e., he loved Him), but , said: " Thou knowest it. When a person is willing to admit that Jesus knows all about them, he is reaching a good point. God help us, when Jesus says anything, to admit it to - be - true. Jesus says. : " Follow thou me". And he told him to feed his lambs( i. e., justified ones) aud then, sheep( sanctified ones). God help us beloved, to feed then as God would have them fed. - Ministers of the many so called churches do not feed their flock as Christ command-ed, but seek to feed themselves, and. have the people follow them and. their creeds and disciplinesenore than to obey God and and the teachings of His word, and they receive their teachings, instead of " Thus saith the Lord". It is well enough to fol-low the example of a godly Bro., but be sure he is following the steps of Jesus. As Paul says, " be ye follwers of the. How ? Even as I am also of Christ. Notice the conversation between Peter and. Jesus, be-fore lie utterad the words of, " what is that to thee? follow thou Me". Jesus started off and Peter following, and Peter turned and wanted. to know what a cer lain disciple would do. So many get their eyes on persons according to the flesh. Now reader it makes no difference what people believe in you , must consider what Jesus says. " What is that to thee ? follow thou Me. He is the way, the truth, and the life. Sickles of Kane now in Mo., who was publicly admonished through the Trumpet tome time ago for improper con-duct, after having been privately labored with by Bro. Achor, now sends us the fol-lowing statement: " I frankly acknowl-edge my wrong, and ask the forgiveness of all God's people and pledge fidelity to the cause. The Lord. has wonderfully anointed me to preach the Word. Praise His name forever? I send this epistle forth in the name of my Master, seeking only the glory of God, asking the prayers of all God's people. Amen." J. W. Sickles. We are glad to receive this communica-tion from the brother, and we assnre him our love, and prayers, that he by a holy life may have the confidence of all the saints, and the blessing of God on his soul and labors. In our very responsible po- . sition we are determined to give sanc-tion and toleration near in no way_ to any- person not walking: in Bible purity. And yet we pledge our love and sympathy to any soul that manifests an humble and sincere spirit to get right with God, and ready to manifest fellowship toward any brother or sister as we are made conscious of his fellowship with the Father and the Lord Jesus. I is with holy indignation because of a, disgrace on the cause of Christ, that we speak of a notorious rascal, who has been tolerated by the inconsistent stupidityof some brethren, and even to some extent by some elders of God's Church ill Wood and Sandusky, Co. Ohio. We would like to know what elders are for, if prowling devils, in. sheep clothing are per-mitted to enter and devour the flock of God, and blaspheme the name of Jesus. When describing the qualification and duties of elders, the Apostle says. " For there are many wanly and vain talkers and deceivers specially they of the circumcision:" Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's . sake.-- Titus. 1: 110,11 And then it is plainly seen that it is the duty of the elders to discern, expose and rebuke, yea stop the mouths of such beasts of prey. For this Christ fills faithful souls with the Holy Spirit, discerning, and all authority. There is no other way for the Church of the New Testament to maintain harmony, peace and purity, but by the possession of holiness, and authority and power of the New Testament dispen-sation. God's Church is not run by hu-man machinery, her preachers are not known by paper credentials. and„ the only license that God gives is a pure heart, the gift of the Holy Spirit, and a divine call, which is always accompanied with a divine qualification. As soon as any man loses the Spirit of God out of his soul, he loses his license, and Ged's children'should live in God where you know what spirits come unto you. Christ rebuked the Church at Thyatira because thy suffered" Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce •, His servants. "— Rev. 2: O. As soon as we re-ce ived the letter, we felt assured that t gian to cry out against wickedness hi. high places, and to preach " repentance for the remission of sins, " but there was still a higher place where the light was blighter and purer, and the Wesleys coming nigh to it, saw that " without holiness no man shafl see the Lord."— Heb. 12: lt Ana they preached that through faith," do enter in the rest of the people Of God, — Heb. 9: 10. But the Kings business requires haste, and God in moving foward at accirerated speed, and as the wise man says, that three fold cord, is not quickly broken. Eccl. 4, 1.2. So we see shortly the gathe- r-ingeof the three strands of justification by faith, sanctification through. faith, and the oneness of God's people with Hfinself, gathered into a mighty cable in our God's hand to bind us to Him, and to each other, and this brings us to the present truth, when God is leading His Church out of bondage into the glorious liberty of the sons of God. Praise His holy name for. ever. Beloved keep your eyes fixed on the Lord, that you may not lose step with Him, and cause a break in the ranks, and perhaps the loss of some one for whom Christ died and if we fall out, we may never be able. to regain the lost place, and lose the reward of all our labors. Itseems that I can almost see the wondegul things God has in store for His holy ones a few short years hence. For who shall dare to say, He has done all, for His Church He can do. I have ever believed in one Lord, one faith one baptism,- the Lord showed me both by the Word, and His Spirit that immersion was right. I have never been able to practice any other mode. I have borne some trials, even among professors of ho-linese, on this account, and also because I hold to feet washing. • We have a great many holiness people in the south, who believe in immersion as the only mode of baptism practiced by the Apostles, and a goodly number of our preachers will not baptize any other way, and a great many of us believe in feet washing because the Master said, we might to do it, and we are sure all true christians are willing to do all the Master tells them to do, it not they are above Him as He says. The work is still moving. on, and many precious souls are seeing eye to eye, and speaking the one and the same thing. But fthank God that I have had the happiness of being led to th e light by a few of God's chosen ones who have never sought for light out aide of God's word, as too _ many of the teachers do, asking light at the altar of baal, instead of tarrying at Jerusa Tem for the endowment of power from on high. I feel that it is woe, woe, to such bl ind guides who are deceiving the people all over the laud. : Illy prayer is that there may be spiritual leaders raised up every where, andthat the light may so shine that the blind guides may be rejected I y the peo-ple, and that the chariot of salvation may roll on in majesty, crushing the powers of iniquity. He keeps my soul tranquil and unmoved through the rough storms and tempests that are raging all around. Je-sus can calm the troubled soul as easy as - when on earth - with his diselpleswhen he calmed the stormy deep. 0 come to Him ye tempest tossed ones ewl o are tired of sin, and tell Jesus all your sorrow, and ask Him to cleanse your hearts and fill you with His spirit; He - will do it, and enable you to walk Le-fore Him without one blot or stain. His blood wash-es whiter than snow. Do not dbubt Him for a mo-ment but look to Him for the cleansblg power, Your sister in christ. DEARLY BELOVED SAINTS: — Christ says, " Ye are my witnesses, " and it is to witness for Him that I Write thishoping it may encourage some of the dear saints to walk out on God's promises, and trust for the healing of the body. I was saved many years ago, was a member of tle Presbyterian sect, and having lived up to all the light I had, but hearing the saints preach that the Bible was all the creed or discipline we needed I readily accepted the light 4 took Christ as all_ and in all, and the Word of God as my only guide. God has been learning me les, Sons of faith all along for the last two years. I have been healed by the laying on of hands in Christ narn of a bad stomach difficulty caused by lead poison-ing and later, of a trouble of the brain pronounced by a physician, the beginning of apoplexy which I accidentally met. But God still meant to try my faith. A. bout 4 weeks ago I was taken - with the La- Grippe. in a mild form. at first, but of a relapse of. lung trouble, brought me very low, so that, neighbors and friends thought I would not recover. I was soon led to think of the command in.— James 5: 14, 15. and sent for Bro. and sister E. Eldridge who anointed me, laying on hands and praying, the prayer of faith at the same time. Bro. E. received a wonderful blessing, as the evidence that Ins prayer was an-swered, and I just left it with the Lorcl, knowing His promise never fails. And Ile has healed me and brought me back to health to Him be all the glory. I feel that I am consecrated to do His - will more t han ever, and. my heart yearns to be the means of savin: 4 souls May the Lord bless all the dear saints and keep - them humble, willing to take any place that will glorify Him, even if it be through suffering.
