Description
Summary:Planktons are very sensitive to the environment, alteration in the environment leads to the change in the plankton communities in terms of tolerance, abundance, diversity and dominance in the habitat. They play important role as a food for aquatic fauna. A detailed study of plankton diversity was carried out on Dobasipalya Lake of Bangalore. Plankton samples were collected and analysed by standard methods (APHA 2005). The water samples were collected during four seasons and studied for plankton diversity. The qualitative and quantitative plankton evaluation showed variation in lake water with high number of phytoplankton and zooplankton population throughout the study period. The study revealed the diversity of Phytoplankton number is of increase as the order of Chlorophyceae >Bacillariophyceae > Cyanophyceae > Eugleanophyceae, While the Zooplankton diversity was in the following order Rotifer > Protozoa > Cladocera > Copepods. Chlorophyceae and Rotifers were observed as dominant groups of organisms. The season wise analysis showed that the maximum number of plankton species increased with rise in aquatic temperature during summer, comparatively less during monsoon and least during winter. The population variation of plankton species was accelerated byFluctuation of ambient air temperature around the water bodies. The present study revealed that the lake water is polluted with the direct entry of sewage and effluent discharge.KEY WORDS: Plankton; Diversity; Temperature; Pollution; Sewage.
