Yet I have no claim to be the author of this publication. In actual fact I feel that I have merely been a scribe and a guardian entrusted with the task of keeping and publishing these records of Komi culture and language bestowed upon me by the real authors: all those men and women, young and old, whose stories and songs and life experiences and wisdom are commemorated on the pages of this book for the edification of readers, present and future. I feel privileged to have earned their trust and friendship that I have treasured for so many years and will treasure till the end of my days. Ich bin jung gewesen und alt geworden . The mission of my life was to keep and hand down these records of Komi language and culture to my contemporaries and to posterity.
