Summary:This paper aims to demonstrate how the honour system in mediaeval Iceland was altered by the Norwegian monarchy using the Sturlunga Saga exclusively as a source. Specifically the focus is on how the Norwegian monarchy caused a split of the old system of honour into one that mirrored closely the social classes imported from Norway. The old honour in which all Icelanders participated was fractured into two streams, a common and elite which were antithetical to each other.
