Summary:Hjalmar Torp is one of the most important Norwegian scholars working on Classical and Byzantine material. Among many other honours and signs of regard, he is Professor Emeritus at the University of Oslo and Member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, who awarded him their prestigious Fridtjof Nansen medal in 1999. He has also been honoured with the Silver Medal of Hagios Demetrios from the Holy Diocese of Thessaloniki, and is a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
