Summary:This chapter briefly describes the long-term climate evolution, as well as, the superimposed abrupt climate shifts that have punctuated the Last Deglaciation, that is, the pre-Heinrich Stadial 1 and the Heinrich Stadial 1, the Bølling–Allerød Interstadial and the Younger Dryas Stadial. A short description of the impact of these abrupt changes in the North Atlantic, Greenland and Europe is also provided as a prelude to the following chapters.
