Summary:Conversation between Lena and Valya while she sews a child's hat and finishes a souvenir hat for sale. Lena is distantly related to Valya and originally comes from Upper Pakhachi (closed in the 70s). Video is interrupted as Lena needs to get up and get trousers and sweater for Aleksei. Conversation continues with arrival of Lena's husband, who joins the conversation. He smoked for many years and suffers the effects, although he quit some 5-7 years ago. Note that Lena is sewing during most of these videos. Making and decorating a hat. Last part of conversation between Valya and Lena after a third short break (not recorded). Plus ambient audio recording for video. Works in Institute for Advanced Teacher Training, Palana. She was born in a yaranga on the tundra. Learned Russian as 4th language starting in grad school and extensive residence in Kamchatka (1995 5mos, 1997-98 17 months). Had very good conversational skills by summer 1997 and fluent by early 1998, at least in listening. Has thick American accent. Knows a few words of Koryak for social situation. Also fluent (listening, reading, some writing/speaking) in English and Japanese. Alutor level is elementary.
