Description
Summary:The "Chaparral" is the former "Halcyon" of the Walkerville and Detroit Ferry Co. fleet. Purchased by the Coast Guard at the beginning of WWII, she was altered and placed in service at the Soo, keeping channels open during winter and assisted in maintenance. Built in Ecorse, Michigan in 1926, she was decommissioned in 1946 and sold to a Canadian company to be rebuilt but this was never accomplished. In 1961, the ship was taken to Quebec, Canada and rebuilt as the coaster "Newfoundland Cruiser" (313944). She was blown aground at Cape Dorset, Baffin Island Sept. 15, 1963, abandoned by the crew, and became a total loss.
