Summary: | The lower, reddish colored layer is a till deposited by the Superior Lobe of the Wisconsin age Laurentide Ice Sheet. That lobe carved the valley now occupied by Lake Superior, which contains numerous iron-rich Precambrian rocks. The overlying tan-colored till was deposited by the Des Moines lobe, which flowed into this area from the NW over terrain underlain mainly by limestone. The highly irregular contact between the two tills is likely the result of soft sediment distortion. |
