Summary:The Black Sea spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) is long-lived fish. Females reach maturity at the age of 10-15 years, males at 9-13 years. The fecundity is quite low. Females have 4 to 32 (14 on an average) young in a litter yearly. Cutty-Quasim equation was used to determine the optimum age of recruitment of the spiny dogfish. The optimum age of recruitment for the spiny dogfish was 8.2 years for males and 11.8 years for females. According to the Von Bertalanffy's growth equation, the corresponding size is equal 82.1 cm for males and 98.5 cm for females. Males of the spiny dogfish become mature at body length 81.7-97.3 cm, while females mature at 97.7-116.3 cm long. Minimum size limit for the spiny dogfish was recommended as an amendment to the existing fisheries regulations. Taking into account the sex ratio in catches, the distribution pattern of the spiny dogfish and the special features of fishing for it, its proposed minimum size limit is 85 cm. The Black Sea dogfish stay in schools of fish uniform in size, swimming at definite depths depending on their biological state and on the environmental factors. So the size composition of catch depend on fishing tactics (mainly fishing depth). Для катрана характерен тип динамики стада, присущий рыбам с относительно большой продолжительностью жизни. Он поздно созревает. Самки достигают половой зрелости в возрасте 10-15 лет, самцы — на 9-13 году жизни. Плодовитость катрана невелика. Ежегодно самки выметывают от 4 до 32 (в среднем 14) экз. молоди. Темп восстановления стада замедлен, в связи с чем популяция катрана в значительной степени подвержена негативному воздействию промысла. При разработке схемы использования его биоресурсов была поставлена главная задача — наиболее полное и эффективное промысловое изъятие без подрыва воспроизводства.
