Description
The lumpfish is used as cleaner fish in part of the parasite control against sea lice in Atlantic salmon and sea trout aquaculture. With an increasing focus of the welfare of all species in sea cages, and with the lumpfish being a relatively new part of aquaculture, there is a need for more knowledge and research of this species as an aquaculture animal. Examinations has been performed on lumpfish in commercial fish farming. The stomach contents of dead lumpfish were analyzed to get an impression of its diet and outer welfare indicators on dead lumpfish was specified by using an OWI-form to see if it could give any information about the welfare of lumpfish and why it dies. This was compared to collected data such as the level of sea lice, mortality, feeding of the lumpfish, other activities in the sea cage and video recordings of the behavior of the lumpfish. The results showed empty stomachs and stomach contents identified as crustaceans, zooplankton organisms, jellyfishes, pieces of plastic, lumpfish- and salmon feed and sea lice. It was also confirmed that sea lice grazing occurred due to the decreasing level of sea lice infestations when new stockings of lumpfish was deployed into the sea cages, and by that the level of female stage of sea lice, which is the stage of sea lice that the lumpfish prefers, has been well below the limit of the average of 0,2 female stage of sea lice per salmon. The thesis confirms that the lumpfish is an opportunist and that its sea lice grazing efficiency keeps the level of sea lice infestations at an satisfying level. It is believed that feeding methods and shelters is essential for food preferences and welfare of the lumpfish, but further research is needed to verify this.
