Description
Summary:In the winter, driving conditions can be worsened because of weather conditions. Roads that go over the tree line are particularly vulnerable to bad weather condition. In really bad weather, roads might even need to be closed for safety reasons. It is the winter road maintenance operators for each stretch of road that have to make the decision about closing a road. In Norway there are many mountain pass roads that go over the tree line. One such road is E6 over Dovrefjell. In 2006 there was an accident at this road where a bus drove of the road. At the time of the accident there were strong winds and the road was icy. After this accident a project was started with the goal of developing better decision support tools for the operators. In this master thesis, a decision support system based on case-based reasoning is presented. The system uses historic weather data to try to decide if a road should be closed or not. Test results indicate that the decision support system presented in this thesis are able to perform better than the decision support tools used by the operators today.
