Summary:During the 1994 Arctic Ocean Section, ice thickness, temperature, salinity, density, flexural strength, surface hardness, crystallography, and drift velocity, and snow thickness, density and type were measured at 40 locations across the centre of the Arctic Ocean. A continuous video record of the ice complements the measurements. The sample sizes for the different measurements are small, but they span the entire voyage. Broader geographic samples of ice conditions are contained in concurrent remotely sensed ice information; this latter can, in turn, be ground-truthed with the direct measurements of ice and snow mechanical properties. The ice and snow mechanical properties data indicate four different navigation zones on the Arctic Ocean Section for ship performance and hull ice loads. The data also provide a waypoint for further investigations of the physics of the ice in the high Arctic. NRC publication: Yes
