Description
Summary:Level ice resistance is a very important design criteria for vessels operating in Arctic waters. IMD has conducted several hundred level ice resistance tests using scale models. This information has been compiled into databases describing level ice resistance, presawn ice resistance, and model descriptions. These databases represent a valuable tool for icebreaking hull designers. It is possible for a designer to pick a basic hull form from one of 40 hulls tested, alter size and shape and make predictions of level ice performance. IMD's standard method for scaling model data to full-scale is briefly outlined as well as techniques for prediction of ship powering. Future plans to extend this database system on non-level ice conditions are also described. NRC publication: Yes
