Summary: | A Vickers indenter was used on ice over a range of loads from 100 to 1200 N at -15C, and the length versus indenter load was empirically determined. The lower limit to the piece size of the crushed particles was measured as 75 ± 41 µm, in good agreement with a calculated value. Using a previously determined arrest stress intensity factor and the crack length data, an estimate of the damage zone beneath the indenter was made, and it was found to be much smaller than that based on an elastic/plastic cavity analysis.
