Evaluation of performance limitations for ships navigating to and from Voisey's Bay, part 4: effect of friction coefficient on the resistance and propulsion of the R-Class Icebreaker

This report presents the results of model experiments carried out to support CCG's evaluations of shipping related to the proposed Voisey's Bay nickel mine. The tests included resistance experiments in pack ice and rubble ice on a model of an R-Class Icebreaker. The model was tested at two...

Description
Summary:This report presents the results of model experiments carried out to support CCG's evaluations of shipping related to the proposed Voisey's Bay nickel mine. The tests included resistance experiments in pack ice and rubble ice on a model of an R-Class Icebreaker. The model was tested at two levels of friction coefficient, corresponding to a new ship and a very low value. The results are used to predict the performance of the ship over a range of ice conditions, likely to be encountered on the coast of Labrador. Peer reviewed: No NRC publication: Yes
