Summary:Model tests with a multi-faceted cone in level ice and ridges were carried out in the 96 m long ice tank at the Institute for Marine Dynamics. This work was carried out as part of a collaborative project by the Memorial University of Newfoundland, the National Research Council Canada, and Esso Resources Canada Limited to study the interaction between a faceted conical structure and a multi-year ridge frozen into a multi-year ice floe. Two scaled models, 1:25 and 1:50, were used in the tests, and two neck sizes were tested at the 1:25 scale. The cone and the neck sections were instrumented separately to measure the forces and moments about the three major axes. EG/AD/S model ice was used and new ridge building techniques were developed. Ridge strength and thickness as well as sheet ice strength and thickness were varied throughout the five weeks of tests conducted. In this paper, the test program us described in detail. Two different ridge failure processes were observed. These failure processes are described, and the associated forces and moments on the cone are reported.
