Summary: | This paper presents a review of the current state of knowledge on the in situ borehole strength of multi-year ice. Since very few data exist in the open literature, data from the private sector are combined with publicly available data to present a review of borehole measurements on second-year and multi-year ice. Data from six studies are compiled and related to fieldwork that was conducted on multi-year ice (in 2002) to further the understanding of how old ice decays. Borehole strength data on old ice are related to corresponding ice temperature and salinity measurements. Peer reviewed: Yes NRC publication: Yes |
