Summary: | Stresses were measured in the rubble field surrounding a caisson-retained island in the southern Beaufort Sea. The rubble movements, geometry and composition were examined. The maximum stress, near the edge of the rubble field, was approximately 200 kPa, apparently caused by thermal expansion of the ice between the shore and the island. Stresses measured near the caisson were negligible, which suggests that all forces applied by the floating ice were resisted by grounding of the rubble. Movements of the rubble during the observation period were also negligible. Peer reviewed: Yes NRC publication: Yes |
