Avalanches caused the relocation of the CPR and the building of the Connaught Tunnel. Careful advance study of avalanches was accordingly essential to the design of the Highway. A special team headed by the author recorded every avalanche along the route from 1957 to 1960, and all relevant climatic facts. Assessment of this information resulted in plans for three stages in the defence of the Highway. Typical is the requirement of 8 snow sheds, totalling 4,825 ft in length, as a major part of the first stage.
