Description
Summary:The asymmetric four-point loading method was used successfully to measure the shear strength of columnar- grained sea ice. The tests were performed during the icebreaking trials of the R.V. "Polarstern" off the Labrador coast in May 1984. Brine volume, air content, ice temperature, and grain-structure effects on shear strength were investigated. Shear strength values were between 550 kPa and 900 kPa, depending on total porosity and grain orientation with respect to the loading direction.
