Summary:The Concordian evorte January 19. 2007 11 Swimmers relax, prepare for MIAC in Florida By RICK FERRERA Staff Writer The Cobber Swimming and Diving Team spent eight days in Florida during the semester break, participating in the team's biannual southern training trip. The athletes swam over 50 miles as they completed 14 two-hour practice sessions and continued the college swim team tradition of taking a training trip somewhere during their season. In this particular instance the athletes shouldered a portion of the cost while Concordia pitched in the rest of the funds. "The vast majority of collegiate teams do a training trip over winter break, because it's right in the middle of the peak season for big yardage," Coach Julie Lucier said, T h e Cobbers put a heavy emphasis on training, to the extent that they don't rest before most meets. Resting does prepare an athlete for the next meet on the schedule, but it also means the loss of three to four days of training for every event of the season. While some schools do choose to rest in preparation for every meet, We're in the tough part of the season now, with lots of training, more yards, and longer practices. Shaina Fossum Sophomore Lucier's team prefers to get in as much training as possible and concentrate on the MIAC championship meet, to be held February 15 to 17 at the University of Minnesota. The Cobbers can and do train at Concordia's facilities, but the trip to Florida offered plenty of benefits above and beyond what 901 8th Street South has to offer in late December. "We're in the tough part of the season now, with lots of training, more yards, and longer practices," Sophomore Shaina Fossum said. In that context, the southern training trip provided a boost to team morale. Fossum called it a "good team bonding experience," and Lucier said it was especially b e n e f i c i a l to train in a different environment where the athletes could stretch their skills in a new setting. Somewhere in the midst of 50 miles in the pool, the team still found time to meet a couple Olympians and even swim with the dolphins. Gary Hall, Sr. swam for the U.S. in Olympic Games in Mexico City, Munich and Montreal from 1968 to 1976, and still regularly works out at the very pool the Cobbers used tor training in Florida. His son, Gary Hall, Jr., swam in the Atlanta, Sydney and Athens Games, and the team met him at the pool as well. "He talked to our team for probably 10 minutes, and he was very nice," Lucier said. The team also took a snorkeling trip one day, and the captain of their boat stopped to let them get into the water and swim with a group o$ dolphins. Lucier said the captain doesn't do that for all his customers, because the average person can't keep up with the animals, but, knowing her group was a swim team, let them have a try. Safely back in the tundra, the team is getting down to business preparing for the MIAC championship meet. Fossum said she hopes to beat the teams the Cobbers are evenly matched with, but she also hopes the MIAC meet will be more about individual accomplishments. The team is looking for 100 percent of their athletes to achieve season-best times in Minneapolis and is hoping for some career-best times to boot. Before heading to the "U," the Cobbers compete at St. Kate's on January 20, and then return to Moorhead for a SUBMITTED PHOTO BY KRISTA WYNIA The Concordia Swim Team get© ready to go snorkling one sunny day in Florida over semester break. On the outing they met a group of dolphins, although their boat captain usually doesn't allow his customers to swim with the sea animals, because they are hard to keep up with, he let the swimmers jump in and cruise around with the pack. rematch against the St. Kate's Wildcats on January 26. The latter meet will be their last home event of the season, as well as Senior Recognition Night. Fossum predicts an exciting last meet because the Cobbers and Wildcats have evenly matched teams. Cobber Nation's Josh Pederson, who watched the Cobber swimmers take on St. Ben's on January 12, said he'd do his best to be there supporting the senior swimmers, and he encouragetl others to show up as well, adding that most people have not seen the excitement of live diving before. Even as the seniors wind up their college careers, the future looks bright for the young team, considering that half of their athletes are freshmen. In the groove after their positive training trip, the Cobbers, as a whole, are set to tackle the challenges facing them in the last month of the season.
