Summary:Winter "wimps" criticized by avid snowmobile lover Instant Replays Jay Lemke Recently the weather has begun to turn cold. And with this change, anti-winter com-ments abound. People of both gender whine like Leo Bascalia. "Oh it's so cold, I hate it, God it's cold," they cry. Babies. Wimps. I have a message for you winter-haters. Leave. We don't need your kind. I'm sure you'd love Southern California. Sure they have earthquakes which kill people, but at least it doesn't get cold. Perhaps Florida Beprey di p disse.c.c.trt.e. nfl e^ct. Then think about how high blood cholesterol can clog up your arteries. Then think about heart attack. Enough to ruin your appetite? American Heart Association WERE FIGHTING FOR NOURUFE would be more to your liking. Yes, there are a lot of drugs and killing in cities like Miami, but it wouldn't freeze. You could die warm. You see, the reason I have lit-tle patience for winter wimps is because they utterly overlook the positive aspects of living in a climate such as ours. Their petty concern is external temperature, and they often do not engage in the activities which cold, snow, and ice provide. Snowmobiling, hockey, skiing, sledding, snow-ball fights, snow-fort building, broomball, and others provide a plethora of pastimes to partake of. Snowmobiling and hockey are my personal favorites. But since snowmobiling seems to get little attention, this column will be devoted to it. Since I began college about four years ago, I haven't been snowmobiling as much as I'd like. Except for Christmas vaca-tion and a weekend here and there, my riding has been kept to a minimum. However, the fond memories of pre-college riding are always present during the snow months, and I look for-ward to the time when schooling will not take precedent over snowmobiling. Or, as they say in and around Thief River Falls, snowcatting. Few experiences match the exhilarating rush of flying down a narrow trail in a forest while snow flutters downwards joining fallen comradres. Going Away For Christmas? Call. N DAK 58102 The only thing which tops this thrill, is if while speeding down the pine laden path, you encounter an unforseen comer. A turn in the path which is per-pendicular to your present course. At this point there are few options. You could quickly squeeze the break lever and hope to stop in time, however this would be a non-manly thing to do. A second recourse would be to close your eyes and careen into the forest ahead. While this may be manly, it is not an intelli-gent action. Another possibility might be to leap off your sled. This is neither manly nor intelli-gent. My advice would be to slight-ly decrease speed, and as you reach the turn, lean into the cor-ner as you turn the skiis. This , will cause the snowmobile to | take the corner more readily. However, I must warn every-body with a Ski-Doo not to head this advice. If you own a Ski- Doo, leap off it when you need the machine to perform. Actually a good rule of thumb is to never purchase a Ski-Doo. My suggestion would be to purchase a snowmobile manufactured in Thief River Falls or Roseau. The sleds built in these northern towns are Arctic Cats and Polarises. Actually, if I'm going to be completely honest, I don't like Polarises much either. I like Arctic Cats. Sure Polaris sleds are a heck of a lot better than Cross-country from page 13 in his second best time of the year. In addition, Todd Johnson finished 78th in 27:41, Jason Day was 81st in 27:44, Jason Trichlcr took 90lhe in 27:55 and Ski-Doo's, but they are not like Cats. Yes, I am biased, and I don't care. You see my Dad was an Arctic Cat dealer, and my first snowmobile outing occurred on little North Star Lake on a Kitty Cat, a snowmo-bile made by Arctic about 1/3 the size of a normal snowmo-bile. Anyway, I was five and my Dad sat me down on the diminu-tive seat of the machine, showed me how to start it, and how to accelerate the Kitty Cat Unfortunately, he neglected to instruct me on the uses of the break. So after having an enjoy-able excursion on the lake's sur-face, I decided to head back home. While turning homeward, I could see the poles of our sum-mer dock, protruding from the icy surface in front of the house. I thought nothing of them, until it was too late. With little knowl-edge of how to stop the machine, I slammed the Cat smack into one of the immov-able posts. If you thought there was no point to the preceding tale, you're wrong. The moral is this; if I could still enjoy the sport after a horrible first try, there must be something to it. However, riding is not for the timid, and it is not for the skit-tish who seek warmth when there is a nip in the air. Snowmobiling is for real people who enjoy the benefits of winter. Erik Johnson claimed the final scoring position with a 114th place time of 28:49. Mark Engebretson and Kyle Johnson finished in 28:54- (118th) and 30:07 (130th), respectively.
