Summary:i mm mm The "Blues Brothers" — a//as Morris Lanning, vice president of student af-fairs and dean of students, and Dr. Paul Dovre — entertain new students at the 1981 Orientation welcome show. During this first decade of Dr. Dovre's - leadership, the long-range plan for on-qampus development — a plan set up more than 25 years ago — was completed. When Dovre took office, Old Main was being remodeled; renova-tion of Grose Hall would follow in 1976. Bogstad Manor, an apartment complex for upper-class students, was completed in 1976 and Brown and Fjelstad residence halls were renovated in 1980-81 and 1984 respectively. The Science Center, housing the biology and home economics departments, was constructed in 1980. A prestigious $3.4 million grant from the Olin Foundation in New York funded an art-communications facility, now under construction north of the Field House. Off-campus, the Norwegian Language Village near Bemidji was essentially completed and three major facilities were constructed at the German Village. Other campus additions included the Founders Court, completed in 1980, the outdo'or ampitheater — "the hill" — in 1981, and the all-weather rjolyform track which was dedicated at homecoming 1983. Dovre was inaugurated as the eighth president of Concordia College. He succeeded Dr. Joseph Knutson who'd retired from the position he'd held for nearly 25 years. When Dovre took office, the college stood, in a way, on the brink of a new age. The ex-plosive growth in enrollment during the late 1940s and "50s had resulted in major facility . •development. Student restiveness in the '60s and 70s had tested the college's mission and goals. Later, national studies, broadly critical of the quality of education, would place colleges beneath the scrutinizing scope of the public, and student numbers would diminish as the "baby boom" generation passed beyond the college years. In 1975, the enrollment of the college was 2,570 and climbing. It would peak at 2,667 in 1978 and then begin a steady decline. However, despite 10 percent fewer high school seniors in its corporate area of North Dakota, northwestern Minnesota and eastern Montana,, Concordia's enrollment has dropped less than 4 percent to stay within the college's optimum enrollment of from 2,400 to 2,600 students. Dovre's bicycle, affectionately known as "the clipper," was stolen and returned only when Dovre promised to 'trek around the track1 at the 1979 homecoming game.
