Summary:October 18, 1985 • The Concordian 13 Golf team rallies for second place in MIAC by Eric Torgerson sports editor The Cobber golf team finished their season last weekend, as they took second in the conference meet held at the Oak Glen Country Club in Stillwater, Minn. A second place finish was the Cobber's goal as the season came to a close. Head Golf Coach John Eidsness was pleased with the results, as they beat St. John's in this meet. They could not, however, overcome Gustavus. "Gustavus has won over us all year," said Coach Eidsness. "They have been about 20 strokes below us throughout the season, so we really didn't expect to beat them." Coach Eidsness added, "We thought we could beat St. John's, so we made that our goal. We accomplished that goal in the last two meets of the year." The Cobber team also took second in the meet previous to the conference meet. That meet was held in Rochester. It was the first time the team had competed solely within division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Their score of 306 was the best team score since Coach Eidsness has been coaching here. Earlier in the season, the golf team was competing against teams twice or three times their size. Once they competed more in their own level they made a bet-ter showing. This is evident with the two second place showings they achieved late in the season. The final team standings for the con-ference and the scores in the conference ,meet are as follows: Gustavus 605 And the WOW winners are. Well readers, it's time for the first block Words of Wammer (WOW) awards. For those of you who are new to Concordia, this columnist gives out awards of achievement each block. The winners receive no trophy or plaque, but upon re-quest will receive an autographed copy, of this column. Let's go to the coveted WOW's. Most Phenomonal Setter: Soni Anderson. Soni has been the Cob-ber's premier setter all year long. She has been called one of the top setters in the conference. The hitters usually get all of the publicity, but Soni deserves much of the credit. Most Amazing Catch in IM Football: Eric Jacobsoh. Play-ing for the Barbarians in the semi-finals game, Eric made an unbelievable one-hand diving catch. You had to see it to believe it Best Fantastic Feats for FOOlS Team: Although they didn't win the event, I still contend that the team comprised of Sara Burros, Mary Rice, Kelly Schroeder, Julie Wahl, Chris Burros, Chris Foss, Paul Sanda and yours truly is the best. The Fred Cox Golden Foot Award: Dave Ertl. The freshman kicker has done well all year. His field goal was the margin of victory and only score in the Macalester game. •Volley from page 12 With a tough defense and a better of-fense, the Cobbers pulled to within three at 10-13. But Gustavus held off the Cob-bers by winning the game 15-10. Gustavus Head Volleyball Coach Gret-chen Koehler said that "We don't overlook anybody in our conference. We played Concordia earlier this year and it was really close so we know that Concor-dia can play much better volleyball." "Both teams had nice rallies today and both played well in spurts, but we (Gustavus) were able to control a few more free balls so we were able to do more with them. Had Concordia controll-ed a few more, the match would have been closer. I don't feel that the scores were indicative of the match, it was much closer than that." \V". v~ Johnson said that last week's losses to Augsburg and Macalester were Steve Wammer WORDS OF WAMMER The Best IM Football Of-ficial Award: Dave Shelstad. A surprise here—even though a newcomer to reffing IM, Shelstad has proved to be superior. A tough category to win, con-sidering I'm a referee, too. The Prove Me Wrong Award: The Otto Beards and the Scorchers. They both proved me wrong in my intramural predictions by winning the championship when I picked so-meone else. The Prove Me Right A w a r d : The Schmengies. I was fed-ing like Jim Adelson until they won the women's intramural championship and devastating and may have contributed to the loss. "We suffered big losses and I think it may have done something to our ego, but it shouldn't have." "Right now our confidence is low and we need to build it up. We are not sure of our hits and our youngness still shows in kept me from missing on all my predic-tions. The Schmengies made a dramatic comeback after losing quarterback and middle linebacker, Sheri Bagby early in the first half. They came back to score with two plays left in the game. The Outstanding Line Judges Award: PaulSandaand Steve Wammer have without a doubt call-ed the best games as line judges in the history of Cobber Women's Volleyball. The Top Athlete/ Dishwasher Award: Mary Rice and Sara Burros. These two outstan-ding freshman volleyball players also did a fantastic job washing my roommates' and my dishes. They have disproved the myth that girls aren't good athletes, and have also shown that women are naturally suited to dishwashing and other domestic chores. The Super Alumni Award: Ew Hall, Dennis Yohum, Yogi True, Dennis Fugrman, Ardus Fuhrman, Cindy Sillers, Larry Wichstrom, John Lundquist, Barb Ander-son, and Doug Larson. These alums (all 1970 grads but one) come from all over to catch the Cobbers homecoming. These weren't your typical alumni retur-ning, though. They got into the game-joining the current students' cheers and starting their own. I know these people did more than hang out at the library when they went to Cord. some situations. In college the action is faster and there is more middle hitting which our players don't see iahigh school and we must adjust to that. With some experience, we will be better," com-mented Johnson. Concordia's next game will be at Carleton on Friday, and then they will play in the St. Olaf tournament on Saturday. Other letter winners for the Cobber golf team are Tom Price, Marc Beulke, A.J. Anderson and Jeff Mattson. "It was a great ending," said Coach Eidsness, "really a din season with a good group to work with. They worked hard all season and I'm pleased with the way they came through." Butner takes fourth PLAYER O F THE WEEK by Cindy Mickelson sports reporter The Player of the Week is Lance Butner. Lance plays for the men's golf team at Concordia and had two outstanding meets in the past two weekends. Lance is from Sidney, Mont., where he participated in football, basketball, baseball and golf in high school. Lance competed on the varsity golf team in grades 9-12. The team placed second, fourth, third, and second, consecutively, at state during those four years. The Cobber men's golf team did well overall at the past two meets. They earned second place at Rochester (Oct. 5-6), and tied for se-cond this past weekend at Stillwater, Minn, in the conference meet. Lance said, "Our sense of team unity is what really helps us out. Even while we're on the course, everyone is cheering each other on and keeping each other Lance Butner psyched." This especially motivated the Cobbers on the first day of the MIAC conference tourna-ment After the first day the team was on-ly three strokes behmd Gustavus Adolphus, who is rated fourth in the nation. Lance's scores were 83 and 79 at the Rochester meet, which earned him fifth place individually. Lance commented that "the team im-proves from week to week, which keeps everyone motivated and wanting to work." Lance is living proof of this. A week after the Rochester meet, Lance earned scores of 76 and 77 in Stillwater. These scores placed him fourth individually in the MIAC conference Lance gave much of the credit for this award to his team members. Lance is a well-rounded athlete, dedicated to do his best for the team. Lance Butner has been named as outstanding in-dividual player of the week, in recognition of his contributions to the Cobber men's golf team. It's back.
