Summary:page 12 the concordian november 20. 198f Urban Studies program selects participants The surrounding mountains In Chllkoot Pass near the headwaters of the Yukon River Is one site students may be visiting as part of the newly-formed Outdoor Leadership Institute. New program offers outdoor leadership The Outdoor Leadership In-stitute (OLI), just introduced this last .summer, is an exciting new series of programs for junior and senior high students. Ranging from relatively easy to very challenging, these outdoor adven-ture programs include biking, canoeing, health sports, kayaking, backpacking and log-cabin building. OLI is teaching students in-terested- in learning a relatively new sport in the U.S. orienteering. In Europe, orienteering is the largest participant sport, averag-ing 20,000 people per event. It in-volves the ability to use a map and compass to find one's way safely and quickly through the woods. Paul Erickson, director of stu-dent activities at Concordia, is the leader for OLI programs. Erickson is an experienced in-structor in each of the activities, as well as having led the record-breaking 1980 Minnesota Ski Ex-pedition Across Greenland. Other instructors include well-trained, highly qualified faculty, staff and alumni of Concordia. One of the more unique OLI programs is Sports for Health, a week-long program involving visually impaired and physically disabled persons along with able-bodied participants. The minimum age for this program is 16. There is no maximum age. The OLI programs are open to junior and senior high high school students who want to be physical-ly and mentally challenged. The summer series began July 26 and ran through Sept. 5. These sum-mer sessions were for junior and senior high students but the fall, winter and spring sessions are geared for the college students. An orienteering program at Concordia Language Camps is planned for Nov. 20—22. Fifteen people from Concordia are going with Kris Bjerkness, a senior at Concordia, heading it. The White Water Kayak Weekend, the Great North Woods Bike Tour V and the Voyageurs Canoe Outing were all past events this year but there are these events still to get involv-ed in: Orienteering Weekend, Nov. 20—22; Ski Across Min-nesota II, Dec. 27 —Jan. 3; Skogf-jorden Rennet V, Jan. 22 — 24; Red River Loppet, Jan. 30; Yellowstone Ski Tour, Feb. 19-28; Spring White Water Kayaking, March 19 — 28; Backpacking Trip-Border Route, April 8-12. Concordia has had four years of experience in developing and conducting adventure-based pro-grams. The college's outdoor ac-tivities program is one of the most exciting and popular aspects of campus life. Each year, over 600 Concordia students participate in bicycling, canoeing, hiking and skiing Seasoned ground beef on a cnsp bed of lettuce, covered with shredded cheese diced tomato, green onions and black olives $3.25 NOON SPECIALS 11 a.m.-3 p.m. 7 Days* Wtek EL PICO PACO or EL POCO LOCO $2.25 MONDAY NIGHT (5 to 11 p m.) The Chicago Urban Studies participants for the second semester of the 1981—82 college year have been selected. Dr. David Schadt, Urban Studies Coor-dinator, announced that the five students who have been selected are: Linda R. Jorgensen, Kristine Martin, Jane McLeod, Linda Tan and Rikka Trangsrud. A max-imum of five students are selected each semester. The finalists include one senior and four juniors. Linda Tan from Malaysia, whose parents presently reside in Taiwan was the sole senior. She is a Business Ad-ministration major. Linda Jorgensen, a junior from Bismark, North Dakota, has Psychology and Business Educa-tion majors. Kristine Martin who will be another junior in Chicago has majors in Religion and Spanish. She is a world resident whose parents presently live in Kenya, East Africa. Jane is from Yankton, South Dakota. She is a junior with Business Ad-ministration and Communications majors. Rikka Transrud, a junior Psychology major, is from Kin-dred, North Dakota. The Urban Studies Program in Chicago is a four credit semester-long involvement in what is called experiential education. The city, rather than textbooks and library resources, provides the grist for imaginative musing and analytical reflection. A highly qualified Ur-ban Studies faculty provides ac-cess to urban resources and gives guidance enabling the students to make the most out of their four month experience. According to Dr. Schadt, ap-plication for the Urban Studies Fall Semester of 1982 will be ac-cepted starting in January. For further information students are encouraged to contact him in the Sociolgy/Social Work Depart-ment.
